Mosquitoes are a fact of life in Paraguay. In certain areas they are a mere annoyance, but in areas of the country subject to dengue outbreaks, they represent a true health hazard. In protecting yourself against mosquitoes I suggest a combination of defensive and offensive techniques. Let’s start with the most fun mosquito elimination method.

Los mosquitos son una realidad de la vida en el Paraguay.  En ciertas zonas no son más que una molestia pero en los áreas del país que son suseptibles al dengue los moquitos representan un gran peligro para la salud.  Para protegerte de los mosquitos les recomiendo una combinación de los siguentes técnicas defensivas y ofensivas. Empecemos con el método más divertido para matar a los moquitos.

Zapping Racket

Avoid a sleepless night of buzzing in your ear by zapping mosquitoes mercilessly with an electric bug zapper racket. Charge it up (there are wall charged and battery operated versions), turn on the lights so you can see what your aiming for and get ready to unleash your inner Ferrer or Williams with a vigorous round of Mosquito Tennis. I bought mine at Casa Paraná for less than Gs. 30,000 but they are also for sale at the Itos and Azos.

Raqueta Eléctrica

Con la ayuda de una raqueta eléctrica mata-mosquitos puedes evitar pasarte la noche en vela con el zumbido de mosquitos en tu oído. Cargalo (algunos se enchufan y otros tienen pilas), prendé las luces así puedes ver bien a tu presa, y hacete el Ferrer o Williams jugando un partido vigoroso de Tennis de Mosquitos. Compré el mío en Casa Paraná por menos de Gs. 30,000 pero también están a la venta en los Itos y Azos.

Repellants

A wide variety of repellants are available in Paraguayan supermarkets, “almacenes” and “despensas” (small general stores) and pharmacies. Topical choices include: lotions, aerosols, sprays, permethrin impregnated bracelets. There are also wall plugins, aerosols and mosquito spirals (“espirales”). My personal favorites are OFF aerosol and Mata Iris Palo Santo spirals. If you have small children remember it is best to only use repellant with up to 30% DEET and put it on their clothing rather than directly on their skin.

Repelentes

Hay una gran variedad de repelentes disponibles en los supermercados, almacenes y farmacias del Paraguay.  Hay lociones, aerosoles, esprays y hasta pulseras impregnadas con permetrina.  También hay difusores eléctricos, aerosoles, y espirales anti-mosquito.  Yo prefiero usar el aerosol OFF y espirales Mata Iris Palo Santo.  Si tienes niños pequeños acordate de ponerles repelente con no más de 30% DEET en la ropa, no en su piel directamente.

Screens
A surprisingly small amount of buildings in Paraguay include mosquito screens. If you are going to live somewhere long term it may be worth investing in having screens put in. You can hire a local carpenter to build screened frames or simply attach screen material to your window frames yourself.  Metal screen material (“tela metálica”) and plastic screen material can be purchased at hardware stores (“ferreterías”), though the latter is usually only available in green.  Mosquito netting (“tela para mosquitero”) or toole (“tul”) can be purchased at fabric stores. Or you can get crafty and use ao po’i (as long as you don´t actually need to be able to see out the window!).

Tela metálica

El uso de telas metálicas en las ventanas y puertas no es común en las construcciones del Paraguay. Si vas a vivir en un lugar por largo rato vale la pena invertir un poco de dinero para instalar mosquiteros.  Puedes contratarle a un carpintero para que fabrique marcos con tela metálica o simplemente pegarlo a los marcos de tus ventanas vos mismo.  Telá metálica y de plástico se puede conseguir en ferreterías, aunque los mosquiteros de plástico normalmente se consiguen sólo en color verde.  También se puede comprar tela para mosquiteros o tul en tiendas de tela.  O puedes darle un toque artesanal y usar ao po’i, ¡aunque al emplear este método no podrás ver a  través de la ventana!

Mosquito nets:
Mosquito nets are also popular, especially for protecting sleeping babies. The only problem I have with them (aside from getting tangled up) is that they tend to cut down on the air flow from your floor or ceiling fan…it is generally hotter under the mosquito net than outside of it. On particularly hot nights you may have to decide which is the lesser of the two evils, the mosquitoes or the heat.

Mosquiteros:

Los mosquiteros son populares, especialmente para proteger a los bebés.  Aparte de no querer terminar enredada en ellos no me gustan porque bloquean el viento del ventilador, ya sea de techo o piso… suele hacer más calor bajo el mosquitero.  Durante las noches muy calurosas puede ser que tengas que escoger entre el peor de los males: el calor o los mosquitos.
