This Sunday Guyra is offering an guided birdwatching trip to the Department of Presidente Hayes. Close to Asunción, this area of the Chaco is known as the Bajo (low) Chaco or the Chaco Húmedo (humid). The trip will include a visit to two “estancias” as well as lunch at the Escuela Agrícola, a school where youth from the entire country learn about agriculture.

Fun facts:

• In the 1800´s Villa Hayes was the site of a French colony named Nueva Burdeos. It was also the site of one of Eliza Lynch´s more infamous snubs by Paraguayan society. Madame Lynch organized a fancy riverboat trip to visit the new colony, only to be ignored by all her high society female guests once onboard. Furious, she ordered all of the extravagant food thrown overboard and forced her guests to wait several hours before finally docking. Now that´s a tantrum!
• The department is named after American President Rutherford B. Hayes. After the war of the Triple Alliance he was asked to arbitrate a dispute between Paraguay and Argentina over ownership of the region. He declared in favor of Paraguay.
• The Escuela Agrícola has a stand at Agroshopping where they sell produce and dulce de leche – it´s amazing.

Este domingo Guyra está ofreciendo una visita guiada al Departamento de Presidente Hayes para hacer avistaje de aves. Cerca a Asunción, esta area del Chaco es conocido como el Bajo Chaco o Chaco Húmedo. La excursión incluirá una visita a dos estancias además de almuerzo en la Escuela Agrícola. Datos divertidos:

• En los 1800´s Villa Hayes fue el sitio de una colonia francesa llamado Nueva Burdeos. También fue el sitio de una de los rechazos más conocidos de Eliza Lynch por la sociedad paraguaya. Madame Lynch preparó un viaje en barco para visitar la colonia nueva pero al embarcar sus huéspedes “de la high” la ignoraron por completo. Furiosa, ordenó que todos los platos extravagantes elaborados para la ocasión fueran hechadas al río y obligó que sus huéspedes esperen horas antes de volver al puerto. ¡Fue un berrinche de aquellas!
• El departamento lleva el nombre del Presidente americano Rutherford B. Hayes quien arbitró una disputa sobre la región entre Argentina y Paraguay después de la Guerra del Chaco. El Presidente declaró a favor de Paraguay.
• La Escuela Agrícola tiene un puesto en Agroshopping donde venden sus productos – hay que probar el dulce de leche. Es riquísimo!
