Happy Spring! – ¡Feliz Primavera!

September 21st is officially the first day of spring in the Southern Hemisphere. Spring certainly has arrived in Paraguay – some trees look like they exploded into bloom, flowers hanging from every branch and twig. Naturally the first day of spring is cause for celebration in Paraguay; today is “Día de la Juventud,” (Day of Youth). “Jóvenes,” or youths, celebrate by exchanging small gifts and having parties. It is also customary to recieve flowers from older family members.

In Asunción the Viceministerio de la Juventud is having a music festival all day in front of the Centro Cultural de la República El Cabildo (the pink building downtown – Avenida de la República between 14 de Mayo and Chile). The Municipality of Asunción has also organized the four day “Primavera de la Guitarra” (Spring of Guitars) festival featuring national and international guitar players.

If you no longer qualify as a “youth” today is the day you should celebrate the energy and optimism of Paraguay´s younger generation, refraining from complaints about “kids these days” … even though their hair can be a little weird!

El 21 de septiembre es oficialmente el primer día de la primavera en el Hemisferio Sur. En definitivo la primavera ha llegado al Paraguay – algunos árboles parecen haber explotado, flores brotando de todos sus ramos. Naturalmente el primer día de la primavera es motivo de celebración en Paraguay; hoy es el “Día de la Juventud.” Los jóvenes celebran con fiestas e intercambiando regalitos. También se acostumbra recibir flores de miembros más viejos (o mejor para no ofender, “más maduros”) de la familia.

En Asunción el Viceministerio de la Juventud está aupsiciando un festival musical en todo el día en la explanada del Centro Cultural de la República “El Cabildo” (el edificio rosado en el centro – Avenida de la República entre 14 de Mayo y Chile). Además, la Municipalidad de Asunción ha organizado un festival “Primavera de la Guitarra” de cuatro días de duración con la participación de guitarristas nacionales e internacionales.

Si ya no calificás como un “jóven” hoy es el día en que debes celebrar la energía y optimismo de la juventud paraguaya, absteniéndote de quejas sobre “los chicos hoy en día” … ¡aunque sus peinados sí pueden ser un poco extraños!


The Atlantic Forrest – El Bosque Atlántico

Paraguay is home to a number of ecoregions, each with its own distinct flora and fauna. Unfortunately many of these regions are under constant and increasing threats from mechanized agriculture and livestock raising to illegal logging. The Altantic Forrest (“Bosque Atlántico”) is both one of the most bio-diverse and threatened region in Paraguay. According to The Nature Conservancy, “In recent years, Paraguay has experienced the most rapid rate of deforestation in all of South America. Much of this has come at the expense of the country’s lush Interior Atlantic Forest region.” Deforrestation has transformed what was once an almost continuous corridor of forrest extending from northeast Brazil to points as far south as Uruguay into small isolated pockets of forrest which are being continously encroached upon.

Paraguay´s 73,000-plus hectare Parque Nacional San Rafael was created in the 1990´s in an atempt to protect this rapidly disappearing ecosystem. In 1997 it was declared an Important Birding Area. According to Guyra Paraguay “San Rafael, located in the southeast of Paraguay, represents the largest continuous block of the remnants of the South American Interior Atlantic Forest (BAAPA according to its initials in Spanish) in the country.”

This upcoming weekend Guyra Paraguay will be leading a weekend-long excursion to Kanguery, their field station located within San Rafael. As San Rafael is difficult to access via public transportation this is a great opportunity to join fellow nature lovers and see one of the most threatened ecoregions in Paraguay (and potentially South America as a whole). Paraguay contiene varios ecoregiones, cada cual con su propio flora y fauna. Desafortunadamente muchas de las dichas regiones están bajo amenazas constantes y crecientes, desde la agricultura mecanizada y ganadería hasta el tráfico ilícito de rollos. El Bosque Atlántico es una de las regiones más bio-diversa y más amenazada del Paraguay. De acuerdo a The Nature Conservancy, “En recientes años, Paraguay ha tenido la taz más alta de deforestación en todo América del Sur. Mucho de ha ocurrido a expensa del exuberante region Bosque Atlántico del Interior.” La deforestación lo ha transformado desde un casi contínuo corredor de bosque, extendiendose desde el noreste de Brazil hasta Uruguay, hasta lo que hoy en día son pequeños áreas aisladas las cuales están bajo amenaza constante.

Este fin de semana Guyra Paraguay estará ofreciendo un viaje de fin de semana a su estación biológico, Kanguery, ubicado dentro de San Rafael. Como es difícil aceder a San Rafael sin vehículo particular este es un gran oportunidad de juntarte con otros amantes de la naturaleza y visitar uno de los ecoregiones más amenazados del Paraguay (y pontecialmente de todo Sud América). El Parque Nacional San Rafael, de más de 73,000 hectáreas fue creado en la década de los 90´s para frenar la acelerada desaparición de este ecosistema. En 1997 fue declarado un IBA (Important Birding Area) o Área Importante para las Aves. Según Guyra Paraguay “San Rafael, localizada en el sur-este del Paraguay en los departamentos de Itapúa y Caazapá, representa el bloque contínuo más grande de los remanentes del Bosque Atlántico del Alto Paraná (BAAPA) en el país.”
