Chirimoyas: Bizarre and Delicious – Chirimoyas: Extrañas y Deliciosas

One of the joys of Paraguay is the abundance of fruit. There are plenty of fruits available for sale in street markets and supermarkets, as well as from vendors at stoplights. There are fruit trees in the plazas and most Paraguayan homes have at least one if not several fruit trees and plants in the yard. Mangoes, oranges, lemons, tangerines, passion fruit, the list goes on and on.

Una de las dichas del Paraguay es la abundancia de fruta. Hay cantidades a la venta en los mercados y supermercados, y también en la calle donde vendedores ambulantes aprovechan de los semáforos para hacer su negocio. Hay árboles frutales en las plazas y la mayoría de los hogares paraguayos tienen por lo menos un árbol o planta frutera en su patio. Mangos, naranjas, limones, mandarinas, mburucuyá, y la lista continua.

To foreigners some fruits may be more exotic than others. One particularly bizzare looking, but tasty, fruit is the chirimoya. That´s “chi” (cheese) “ri” (retail) “mo” (motel) “ya” (jumbalaya). Chirimoya is also known as “aratiku´i” in Guarani. Chirimoyas are light green with a large bumpy exterior. For lack of a better term I´d describe the bumps as large green warts (I´m open to suggestions). The “warts” start off tightly packed. As chirimoyas ripen the warts grow and the skin between them turns a pale yellow. The yellow areas will start to get wider and softer. At this point they should be picked and allowed to ripen indoors for a couple of days. You could just let them continue to ripen on the tree but there is a risk. Any ripening chirimoyas left on tree will be picked at by birds or covered with ants who can now access the sweet interior through warts’ the soft yellow surroundings.

Para extranjeros algunas frutas quizás sean más exóticas que otras. Una fruta con apariencia muy extraña pero un sabor delicioso es la chirimoya. La chirimoya se llama “aratiku´i” en Guarani. Chirimoyas tienen un color verde pálido con un exterior desigual y granulosa. Parecería que están cubiertos con verrugas enormes y verdes….no se me ocurre otra manera de describirlos (¡acepto sugerencias!). Estas “verrugas” están muy tupidas al principio. Al madurarse chirimoya las verrugas crecen y la área entre ellos se torna color manteca. Las áreas amarillas se ensancharán y se ablandarán. Al llegar a este punto se deben sacar del árbol pero todavía dejar que maduren unos días. Tambíén puedes dejar que maduren en el árbol mismo, pero corres un riesgo. Cualquier chirimoya madura que queda en el árbol será comida por pajaritos y cubierta por hormigas que ya pueden acceder al interior dulce vía la piel suave y amarilla rodeando las verrugas.

A chirimoya is dead ripe when it begins to split along the yellow parts between the warts and can be pulled apart easily by hand. The interior is full of pointy shaped, creamy white sections that separate easily from the outer skin. Encased in almost all sections is a half inch long dark oval seed. If you are a meticulous sort of person it can be fun to eat a chirimoya section by section. If not then just shove a whole chunk in your mouth and spit out the seeds! To me chirimoyas taste like a creamier version of a pear with a little bit of green apple flavor. How would you describe them?

Una chirimoya está totalmente madura cuando empieza a partirse a lo largo de la piel amarilla y se puede abrir fácilmente con las manos. El interior se encuentra lleno de secciones puntiagudas pero suaves de color crema. Estos se separan fácilmente de la capa exterior. Dentro de casi todas estas secciones hay una semilla negra de un poco más de un centímetro de largo. Si sos una persona meticulosa es divertido comer la chirimoya sección por sección. ¡Si no entonces métete una cantidad en la boca y escupe las semillas! Para mi las chirimoya saben como una versión más cremosa de una pera, con un toque de manzana verde. ¿Como los describirías vos?

Birding trip to Club Mbigua – Observación de Aves en Club Mbigua

Have you ever looked across the Bay of Asuncion (best seen from a tall building downtown) and wondered what is out there? The answer? Lots of birds! For their first birding trip of 2010 Guyra has organized an outing to the Club Mbigua, located in the bay. The club is named after the “mbigua” (Cormorant), one of the many birds living in this Important Birding Area. Visitors to Asunción shouldn´t miss a chance to head out to the bay for taste of Paraguay´s natural surroundings. The trip will take place this Saturday, February 13th. A perfect opportunity for a romantic gesture if you have your eye on a bird lover!

One Last Birding Trip – Un último viaje de Avistaje de Aves

The Atlantic Forrest – El Bosque Atlántico

Paraguay is home to a number of ecoregions, each with its own distinct flora and fauna. Unfortunately many of these regions are under constant and increasing threats from mechanized agriculture and livestock raising to illegal logging. The Altantic Forrest (“Bosque Atlántico”) is both one of the most bio-diverse and threatened region in Paraguay. According to The Nature Conservancy, “In recent years, Paraguay has experienced the most rapid rate of deforestation in all of South America. Much of this has come at the expense of the country’s lush Interior Atlantic Forest region.” Deforrestation has transformed what was once an almost continuous corridor of forrest extending from northeast Brazil to points as far south as Uruguay into small isolated pockets of forrest which are being continously encroached upon.

Paraguay contiene varios ecoregiones, cada cual con su propio flora y fauna. Desafortunadamente muchas de las dichas regiones están bajo amenazas constantes y crecientes, desde la agricultura mecanizada y ganadería hasta el tráfico ilícito de rollos. El Bosque Atlántico es una de las regiones más bio-diversa y más amenazada del Paraguay. De acuerdo a The Nature Conservancy, “En recientes años, Paraguay ha tenido la taz más alta de deforestación en todo América del Sur. Mucho de ha ocurrido a expensa del exuberante region Bosque Atlántico del Interior.” La deforestación lo ha transformado desde un casi contínuo corredor de bosque, extendiendose desde el noreste de Brazil hasta Uruguay, hasta lo que hoy en día son pequeños áreas aisladas las cuales están bajo amenaza constante.

Paraguay´s 73,000-plus hectare Parque Nacional San Rafael was created in the 1990´s in an atempt to protect this rapidly disappearing ecosystem. In 1997 it was declared an Important Birding Area. According to Guyra Paraguay “San Rafael, located in the southeast of Paraguay, represents the largest continuous block of the remnants of the South American Interior Atlantic Forest (BAAPA according to its initials in Spanish) in the country.”

El Parque Nacional San Rafael, de más de 73,000 hectáreas fue creado en la década de los 90´s para frenar la acelerada desaparición de este ecosistema. En 1997 fue declarado un IBA (Important Birding Area) o Área Importante para las Aves. Según Guyra Paraguay “San Rafael, localizada en el sur-este del Paraguay en los departamentos de Itapúa y Caazapá, representa el bloque contínuo más grande de los remanentes del Bosque Atlántico del Alto Paraná (BAAPA) en el país.”

Birdwatching in the Humid Chaco – Avistage de Aves en el Chaco Húmedo

This Sunday Guyra is offering an guided birdwatching trip to the Department of Presidente Hayes. Close to Asunción, this area of the Chaco is known as the Bajo (low) Chaco or the Chaco Húmedo (humid). The trip will include a visit to two “estancias” as well as lunch at the Escuela Agrícola, a school where youth from the entire country learn about agriculture.

Este domingo Guyra está ofreciendo una visita guiada al Departamento de Presidente Hayes para hacer avistaje de aves. Cerca a Asunción, esta area del Chaco es conocido como el Bajo Chaco o Chaco Húmedo. La excursión incluirá una visita a dos estancias además de almuerzo en la Escuela Agrícola. Dicha escuela se dedica a eseñarles a jóvenes de todo el país sobre agricultura.

In the 1800´s Villa Hayes was the site of a French colony named Nueva Burdeos. It was also the site of one of Eliza Lynch´s more infamous snubs by Paraguayan society. Madame Lynch organized a fancy riverboat trip to visit the new colony, only to be ignored by all her high society female guests once onboard. Furious, she ordered all of the extravagant food thrown overboard and forced her guests to wait several hours before finally docking. Now that´s a tantrum!

En los 1800´s Villa Hayes fue el sitio de una colonia francesa llamado Nueva Burdeos. También fue el sitio de una de los rechazos más conocidos de Eliza Lynch por la sociedad paraguaya. Madame Lynch preparó un viaje en barco para visitar la colonia nueva pero al embarcar sus huéspedes “de la high” la ignoraron por completo. Furiosa, ordenó que todos los platos extravagantes elaborados para la ocasión fueran hechadas al río y obligó que sus huéspedes esperen horas antes de volver al puerto. ¡Fue un berrinche de aquellas!

The department is named after American President Rutherford B. Hayes. After the war of the Triple Alliance he was asked to arbitrate a dispute between Paraguay and Argentina over ownership of the region. He declared in favor of Paraguay.

Behaving like an Animal – Comportarse como un Animal

In Paraguay animal names are commonly used as nicknames and descriptive adjectives. This derives from a rural tradition of living in close proximity with nature. You can learn a lot about animal behavior by paying attention to this peculiarity of Paraguayan culture! Some examples:

En Paraguay los nombres de animales se usan comunmente como apodos y adjetivos descriptivos. Esto deriva de una tradición rural de vivir en proximidad a la naturaleza. Puedes aprender mucho sobre el comportamiento de varios animales al prestar atención a esta idiosincracia paraguaya. Algunos ejemplos:

Smart n´smelly – Inteligente y maoloriento

The “Aguará” (Aguará Guazú or Manned Wolf) looks like a cross between a wolf and a fox. It is very intelligent but also very smelly. It is therefore important to note the context in which “aguará” is used as a nickname… it can be a compliment or an insult.

El “Aguará” (Aguará Guazú zorro grande/de crin) parece un híbrido entre lobo y zorro. Es muy inteligente pero también muy apestoso. Porende es de suma importancia ver el contexto en el cual se usa “aguara” como apodo… puede ser elogio o insulto.

“Lembú” (Escarabajo or May-Beetle): Telling someone they are acting like this hard-shelled bettle is the equivalent of saying they are being moody and hard-headed.

“Lembú” (Escarabajo): El “lembú” es un tipo de escarabajo con un caparazón muy duro. Se le llama “lembú” al que es muy testarudo y mal humorado.

A good babysitter – Un buen niñero

“Alonsito” (Hornero or Ovenbird): These birds are known for building nests out of mud that resemble mud ovens, hence the name. Males sometimes end up caring for the offspring of other males. “Alonsito” (Pajaro Hornero): A estas aves se les conoce por sus nidos de barro que parecen pequeños hornos (porende el nombre “hornero”). En algunas ocasiones los machos cuidan los hijos de otro macho hornero. El apodo se le da a un hombre quien le ayuda a su pareja a cuidar los hijos que ella tuvo con otro hombre. Kururu pyta: In Guaraní it means “red toad” and this particular amphibian will puff up and spit at you when poked with a stick or otherwise bothered. Someone who is getting all huffy and puffy is told they are “being ‘argel’ (sourpuss/moody) like a kururu pyta.”

Kururu pyta: En Guaraní significa “sapo rojo.” Al ser molestado el sapo se hincha y hasta escupe sobre su agresor. Si alguien se enoja fácilmente se le dice que “es ‘argel’ (más o menos significa malhumorado) como el kururu pyta.”

Yagua’ i: Puppies never stop yapping and running back and forth, which is why “yagua´i” also means tattle-tale.

Yagua’ i: Los cachorritos (Yagua = perro, ´i = pequeño) nunca paran de ladrar y siempre corren de aquí para allá. Por eso se les llama “yagua´i” al que es soplón o cuentero y siempre les delata a todos sus compañeros del colegio.

The Pink Lapacho – El Lapacho Rosado

Paraguay has an abundance of flowering trees – each season different ones bloom filling the landscape and carpeting the ground with bright colors. There is always a new color to enjoy – the chivato´s orange, the jacaranda´s lilac, and these days the lapacho´s pink. The lapacho is the national tree of Paraguay and comes in three varieties – pink, yellow, and white, the later being the rarest of the three. The lapacho is often referred to by it´s Guaraní name – “tajy,” pronounced “ta” (like “tardy”) “you.” In Paraguay nothing says “winter” like the lapacho rosado in full bloom. For a capital city Asunción has an abundant amount of nature on display so you will be able to enjoy the pink scenery even if you don´t go to the countryside.

Paraguay disfruta de una abundacia de árboles florecientos. Cada temporada distintos árboles florecen llenando el paisaje y alfombrando el suelo con colores vívidos. Siempre se puede disfrutar un color nuevo – el naranja del chivato, la lila del jacaranda, y en estos días, el rosado del lapacho. El lapacho es el árbol nacional del Paraguay y hay tres variedades – el rosado, amarillo, y blanco (siendo el último el menos frequente). De a menudo se le llama por su nombre Guaraní, “tajy,” pronounciado “ta -yú.” Durante el invierno paraguayo el lapacho rosado está en pleno esplendor. Asunción goza de un despliege de naturaleza asique podrás disfrutar el paisaje rosado aún si no sales al campo.

Birdwatching in Chaco’i – Observación de Aves en Chaco´i

Ever wonder what is on the other side of the Bay of Asunción? Here´s the answer: birds! This Sunday Guyra Paraguay is offering a birdwatching trip to Chaco´i in the Bay of Asunción. “Guyra” is the Guaraní word for bird and Guyra Paraguay is the main birding organization in Paraguay dedicated to protecting Paraguay´s biodiversity with a specific emphasis on birds. According to the Guyra Paraguay website the Bay of Asunción is “one of the most important stopover places for Nearctic and austral migratory birds.” The trip will include transportation via boat, an ornithological guide, and lunch. In addition to birdwatching, crossing the bay also allows you a completely different view of Asunción (without any bus noises).
¿Alguna ves te has preguntado que hay al otro lado de la Bahía de Asunción? He aquí la respuesta: ¡aves! Este domingo Guyra Paraguay ofrecerá un tour de Chaco´i, en la Bahía de Asunción, para observación de aves. “Guyra” significa “ave” en Guaraní y Guyra Paraguay es la organización principal en Paraguay dedicado a la protección de la biodiversidad paraguaya con un enfoque específico en aves. De acuerdo a su sitio de web la Bahía de Asunción es “uno de los sitios mas importantes de parada durante el recorrido de las aves migratorias neárticas y australes.” El tour inculirá el transporte en lancha, un guía ornitólogo, y un asado de almuerzo. En adición a la observación de aves, al cruzar la bahía podrás apreciar Asunción desde un punto de vista muy distinta (y sin ruidos de colectivos).

The trip meeting point is Playa Montevideo in Microcentro. To get there simply walk down Calle Montevideo (parallel to Colón) until you hit the water (from Mscl. Lopez take any bus headed downtown that says “Pte. Franco / Colon” such as the 12, or 26). If you feel like exploring Chaco´i on your own boats leave from Playa Montevideo and return from Chaco´i every 20 mins. The fee is Gs. 3,000 each way.
El punto de partida del tour es Playa Montevideo en Microcentro. Para llegar simplemente hay que caminar por Calle Montevideo (paralela a Colón) hasta llegar al agua (desde Mscl. Lopez tomar cualquier colectivo hacia el Centro que dice “Pte. Franco / Colon” como el 12, o 26). Si quieres explorar Chaco´i por tu propia cuenta las lanchas salen de Playa Montevideo y regresan de Chaco´i cada 20 mins. El pasaje cuesta Gs. 3,000 por viaje.

Sounds from a Night in the Campo – Sonidos de la Noche en el Campo

Turn up the volume on this video to hear sounds from the Paraguayan countryside, or “campo,” at night. Depending on where you are in the campo (in a town, further out in a “companía,” close to a main road) the sounds of nature might also be accompanied by the occasional motorcycle or music from a bar or party. As dawn approaches the roosters start crowing like crazy! This video was taken around 11pm on the side of a dirt road (tape pyta) in Britez Cue, a small town in Departamento Canindeyu.

Sube el volumen de este video para oir sonidos del campo paraguayo a la noche. Dependiendo de donde te encuentras en el campo (en un pueblo, companía, cerca de la ruta) los sonidos del campo pueden ser acompañados por los de motocicletas o música de una fiesta o bar. ¡Cuando se acerca el amanecer los gallos empiezan a cacarear como locos! Este video fue tomado alrededor de las 23 hs en un camino de tierra (tape pyta) en Britez Cue, un pueblo chico del Departamento Canindeyu.

Pig in Guaraní – Chancho en Guaraní

The Guaraní word for “pig” is “kure” with an emphasis on the “e.” A piglet is called a “kure ´i.” Here are some phrases having to do with “kure.”

Kure Luque
Luque (a satellite town of Asunción) has a pig as their soccer team mascot, which is why their team is commonly refered to as Kure Luque.

Kurepa or Kurepi

During the Guerra de la Triple Alianza Paraguay battled with Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina. Argentines with thier European heritage had lighter skin than the other soldiers. This earned them the nickname “kurepire” because their skin (pire) was as light as a pig´s. This was shortened to “kurepí” and nowadays Argentines are commonly refered to in Paraguay as “kurepas.” Somehow changing the “i” at the end to an “a” makes it less insulting and more acceptable for everyday use.

A Jopará (mixture of Guaraní and Spanish) joke

Q: Que le dijo el chanco al doctor? What did the pig say to the doctor

A: Yo también kure! I also cure! (curé means cured in Spanish)

La palabra Guaraní para “chancho” es “kure” con la énfasis en la “e.” Aqui hay algunas phrases que tienen que ver con “kure.”

Kure Luque

La mascota del equipo de fútbol de Luque (ciudad satélite de Asunción) es un chanco, por lo cual se les dice al equipo Kure Luque.
