Sometimes it’s the simple things people miss the most. For Paraguayans and/or Paraguay lovers abroad yerba mate is always a welcome gift! While yerba mate certainly is avaliable for purchase outside of Latin America it is very expensive (between US $8 and $12 per kilo) and the selection is limited. So figure out your friends’ favorite brand, hit your local almacen or supermarket, and give the gift of Paraguayan yerba mate for the holidays!

For lovers of Paraguayan textiles a visit to Yataity is in order. Yataity is the hometown of ao po’i, a finely woven cotton cloth decorated with embroidery and sold as tablelinens and clothing. Although you can visit Yataity year round the best time to go is during their annual “Expoferia del Ao po’i.” This year the festival is slated to run from November 27th to December 6th. Throughout the course of the festival there are many ao po’i stands around the town’s main plaza, providing a chance to meet several local artisans and choose from a wide selection of ao po’i. Para amantes de textiles paraguayos Yataity merece una visita. Yataity es conocida como el capital del ao poí, una tela de algodon finamente tejida y decorada con bordados de la cual se hace mantelería y ropas. Aunque puedes visitar el pueblo durante todo el año la mejor época es durante su Expoferia del Ao poí.” Este año el festival se llevará al cabo desde el 27 de noviembre hasta el 6 de diciembre. Durante todo el festival hay varios puestos de ao po´i rodeando la plaza principal, proveyéndole a los visitantes la oportunidad de conocerles a artesanas y escoger de una amplia selección de ao po´i. ¿Curioso? Traditional silver filigree jewelry is a good option if you’d rather bring back something small. Fine silver threads are pressed together into earrings, necklaces, bracelets and brooches. Flower shapes abound but there are a variety of designs. Silver filigree jewelry is very popular and as such available in most jewelry and handicrafts stores in Asuncion. For a wider selection take a quick trip out to Luque, one of Asuncion’s satellite cities (on the way to the airport). Luque is home to many silver “filigrana” artists many of whose storefronts and workshops are located in the center of town along the main plaza. Joyería tradicional de filigrana de plata es una buena opción si prefieres llevar algo pequeño. Hilos finos de plata son usados para crear aros, collares, pulceras y broches. Diseños en forma de flores abundan pero hay una variedad de diseños. La filigrana de plata es muy popular, porende se vende en la mayoría de las joyerías y tiendas de artesanías en Asunción. Para una selección más amplia toma un viajecito a Luque, uno de los ciudades satélites de Asunción (ubicado cerca del aeropuerto). Muchos artesanos de filigrana son oriundos de Luque y tienen sus tiendas y talleres en el centro de la ciudad cerca de la plaza principal. If you want to purchase indigenous handicrafts at a great (and fair trade) price then Museo Boggiani is a great place to go. Indigenous artists from over 40 communities bring their wares to the museum and set their own prices. The museum has a huge range of handicrafts including textiles, baskets, feathered headdresses and, my favorites, wooden animal carvings. Though they are not sold as such I think the animals would make great presents for children. There is a wide selection of monkeys, birds, yacarés, jaguars, armadillos and various other Paraguayan animals, each unique and very expressive. The carvings vary in weight depending on the type of wood used. Smaller animales range from Gs. 5,000 to Gs. 15,000 and larger ones range from Gs. 20,000 to Gs. 50,000 (there are also oversize carvings available).
