Whether you´re shopping for locals or friends back home gifts made by Paraguayan artisans are always well received and highly affordable. Check out the offerings in the IPA (Instituto Paraguayo de Artesanía) tent diagonally opposite Shopping Mariscal Lopez, the group of stores along Calle Colon known as “La Recova,” and stalls in the Plaza de los Heroes. If you´re in the countryside consider supporting local artisans.

If you live in the countryside then the local “novedades” store is your best bet for one-stop Christmas shopping. “Novedades” is the Spanish word for “novelties.” Though merchandise in “novedades” stores tends to lean towards the girly side, a well stocked “novedades” store will have something for everyone. There are toys, clothes, perfumes, art supplies, home goods, the list goes on and on.

Sometimes it’s the simple things people miss the most. For Paraguayans and/or Paraguay lovers abroad yerba mate is always a welcome gift! While yerba mate certainly is avaliable for purchase outside of Latin America it is very expensive (between US $8 and $12 per kilo) and the selection is limited. So figure out your friends’ favorite brand, hit your local almacen or supermarket, and give the gift of Paraguayan yerba mate for the holidays!

For lovers of Paraguayan textiles a visit to Yataity is in order. Yataity is the hometown of ao po’i, a finely woven cotton cloth decorated with embroidery and sold as tablelinens and clothing. Although you can visit Yataity year round the best time to go is during their annual “Expoferia del Ao po’i.” This year the festival is slated to run from November 27th to December 6th. Throughout the course of the festival there are many ao po’i stands around the town’s main plaza, providing a chance to meet several local artisans and choose from a wide selection of ao po’i. Yataity es conocida como el capital del ao poí, una tela de algodon finamente tejida y decorada con bordados de la cual se hace mantelería y ropas. Aunque puedes visitar el pueblo durante todo el año la mejor época es durante su Expoferia del Ao poí.” Este año el festival se llevará al cabo desde el 27 de noviembre hasta el 6 de diciembre. Durante todo el festival hay varios puestos de ao po´i rodeando la plaza principal, proveyéndole a los visitantes la oportunidad de conocerles a artesanas y escoger de una amplia selección de ao po´i. ¿Curioso? Traditional silver filigree jewelry is a good option if you’d rather bring back something small. Fine silver threads are pressed together into earrings, necklaces, bracelets and brooches. Flower shapes abound but there are a variety of designs. Silver filigree jewelry is very popular and as such available in most jewelry and handicrafts stores in Asuncion. For a wider selection take a quick trip out to Luque, one of Asuncion’s satellite cities (on the way to the airport). Luque is home to many silver “filigrana” artists many of whose storefronts and workshops are located in the center of town along the main plaza. Para una selección más amplia toma un viajecito a Luque, uno de los ciudades satélites de Asunción (ubicado cerca del aeropuerto). Muchos artesanos de filigrana son oriundos de Luque y tienen sus tiendas y talleres en el centro de la ciudad cerca de la plaza principal. Festival Internacional del Poncho Pará’í de 60 Listas

Reina Cáceres, author of Poncho Paraguayo: Hilos de Tradición and Historia, Diseños y Colores – Poncho Para´i de 60 Listas, discusses the Paraguayan poncho in Guaraní.

The 8th annual Festival Internacional del Poncho Pará’í de Sesenta Lista is taking place this Friday in Piribebuy (Departamento Cordillera). The festival coincides with the patron saint festivities taking place this weekend in honor of Piribebuy´s Ñandejára Guazú, making this a good time to visit this historic city.

The festival will feature various national musicians including Ricardo Flecha, Giordo Torales, Grupo Generación, and Juan Cancio Barreto who has been mentioned before on this blog and is known for always sporting the traditional “poncho pará’í” (more on that later). Representing the international portion of the festival is Argentine band Aristóbulo del Valle. Dance performances will be given by Grupo Piribebuy Jeroky and the afro-dance troupe Ballet Kamba Kua of Fernando de la Mora.

Aside from music, dancing, and typical Paraguayan foods the festival will feature exhibits regarding and sales of the Poncho Pará’í de 60 Listas which have been made in Piribebuy since the era of Dr. Francia. Traditionally the ponchos are black and white although modern tastes have lead to the incorporation of other colors. Woven out of very fine 100% cotton thread the ponchos are light-weight despite their size. Each has three components: the main body of the poncho, the intricate strip along the entire edge of the poncho called a “faja,” and attached to that the fringe.

In this ABC article, Rosa Segovia (pictured), explains the process of making each poncho. According to her four people working together will work 15 full days to create a poncho. Drive down Rt 2 till km 64 and take the turn off for Piribebuy/Paraguarí (Ruta General Rogelio Benitez) 10 km to downtown Piribebuy. Both roads are paved. Empresa Piribebuy also has buses that leave from the Terminal de Omnibus.

El festival coincide con las fiestas patronales de este fin de semana en honor a Ñandejára Guazú, lo cual hace que esto sea un lindo momento para visitar esta histórica ciudad paraguaya.

El festival incluirá la actuación de muchos músicos nacionales incluyendo a Ricardo Flecha, Grupo Generación, and Juan Cancio Barreto who has been mentioned before on this blog y es conocido por siempre llevar el tradicional “poncho pará’í” (más sobre eso en un momento). Representando la porción internacional del festival es el grupo argentino Aristóbulo del Valle. Los grupos de danza Grupo Piribebuy Jeroky y el gruop afro Ballet Kamba Kua de Fernando de la Mora harán presentaciones de baile.

Además de la música, bailes, y comidas paraguayas típicas el festival incluirá exhibiciones y ventas del Poncho Pará’í de 60 Listas los cuales han sido elaborados en Piribebuy desde la era de Dr. Francia. Tradicionalmente los ponchos son hechos en blanco y negro aunque los gustos modernos han llevado a que se incorporen otros colores. Tejidos de hilo 100% muy fino los ponchos son livianos, a pesar de su tamaño. Tienen tres componentes: el tejido principal del poncho, la cinta intricada que bordea el poncho llamado la “faja,” y unido a este los flecos.

Presents Made in Paraguay – Regalos Hechos en Paraguay

Here are some suggestions for Christmas presents that are affordable, interesting and “Hechos en Paraguay.”

Ñandutí earrings available for Gs. 5,000 at the artesanía stands in Plaza de la Libertad (Chile and Oliva in the Centro). I have also seen them in the artesanía stand on the ground floor of Shopping Villa Morra.

If you want to purchase indigenous handicrafts at a great (and fair trade) price then Museo Boggiani is a great place to go. Indigenous artists from over 40 communities bring their wares to the museum and set their own prices. The museum has a huge range of handicrafts including textiles, baskets, feathered headdresses and, my favorites, wooden animal carvings. Though they are not sold as such I think the animals would make great presents for children. There is a wide selection of monkeys, birds, yacarés, jaguars, armadillos and various other Paraguayan animals, each unique and very expressive. The carvings vary in weight depending on the type of wood used. Smaller animales range from Gs. 5,000 to Gs. 15,000 and larger ones range from Gs. 20,000 to Gs. 50,000 (there are also oversize carvings available).

Museo Arqueológio y Entográfico Guido Boggiani is located on Coronel Bogado 888 about a block from the main plaza in San Lorenzo. Buses 56 or 26 go down Mariscal Lopez (away from the Centro) to San Lorenzo.

El Museo Boggiani en San Lorenzo es un buen lugar para comprar artesanías indígenas a un precio bueno (y justo). Artesanos de más de 40 comunidades traen sus productos al museo y ellos mismos deciden los precios. El museo dispone de una variedad amplia de artesanías incluyendo textiles, cestería, arte plumario, y mis favoritos, animales tallados en madera. Aunque no son vendidos como tal yo pienso que dichos animales serían lindos regalos para niños. Hay muchas opcioniones de animales incluyendo monos, pájaros, yacarés, jaguares, armadillos y otros animales paraguayos. Cada uno es único y muy expresivo. El peso de los animales varía dependiendo de que madera están elaboradas. Animales pequeños cuestan entre Gs. 5,000 y Gs. 15,000 y los grandes entre Gs. 20,000 y Gs. 50,000 (también hay animales de tamaños extra grandes).

Museo Arqueológio y Entográfico Guido Boggiani se encuentra ubicado en Coronel Bogado 888 a una cuadra de la plaza principal de San Lorenzo. Para llegar puedes tomar el colectivo linea 56 o 26 que bajan por Mariscal Lopez (saliendo de la ciudad) hasta San Lorenzo.

Also on the ground floor of Shopping Villa Morra is a new storefront called Postal PY selling funny Paraguay themed t-shirts. The 100% cotton shirts are designed and assembled in Paraguay. Each shirt costs Gs. 60,000 and there are about 15 designs to choose from. They will make for good conversation starters both in and out of Paraguay.

La planta baja de Shopping Villa Morra también ofrece otra opción – una tienda nueva llamada Postal PY que vende remeras chistosas con temas Paraguayas. La remeras están hechas de 100% algodón y son diseñadas y confeccionadas en Paraguay. Cada remera cuesta Gs. 60,000 y hay alrededor de 15 diseños. Serán un buen tema de conversación tanto en Paraguay como en el extranjero.

Bovine inspired tereré gourds and shot glasses might make the perfect gag gift for the manly man in your family (or group of friends). Probably not suitable for vegetarians though. I have seen these at the artesanía stands along Calle Palma, the stands in the Plaza de la Libertad (Chile and Olivia behind the Panteón de los Heroes), as well as in the IPA tent next to Shopping Villa Morra.

Paraguay is paradise for anyone who likes fresh homemade jams, sweets and fruit liquers. Some of the best I´ve had came from Productos Artesanales ENSY, run by Sylvia Hardt de Scholz and her husband. Visit their stand at the IPA (Instituto Paraguayo de Artesanos) tent in the plaza next to Shopping Villa Morra to taste for yourself. They also have decorative tacuara (bamboo) bottle cases so you can make your delicious present extra special. Jams run about Gs. 15,000.

Paraguay es el paraíso para los aficionados de mermeladas, ducles y licores caseras. Entre los mejores que he probado están las de Productos Artesanales ENSY elaborados por Sylvia Hardt de Scholz y su esposo. Visitales en el puesto de IPA (Instituto Paraguayo de Artesanos) en la plaza al lado de Shopping Villa Morra y compruebalo vos mismo. También ofrecen cajas (o portabotellas) hechas de tacuara (bambú) decorados para hacer que tu regalo sea aún más dulce. Mermeladas cuestan aproximadamente Gs. 15,000.

Ao Po’i Festival – Expoferia de Ao Po’i

The time has come again for Yataity´s yearly Ao po´i festival! Visiting Yataity offers the chance to purchase ao po’i clothing and textiles directly from the artesanas and enjoy the “tranquilo” atmosphere of a idyllic Paraguayan town. Although ao po´i is sold around the town year round during the Expo most of the artesanas gather around the main plaza and you don´t need to worry about waiting during siesta for stores to open.

¡Ya llegó el momento de la Expoferia de Ao Po´i en Yataity! Una visita a Yataity (oficialmente “Yataity del Guaira”) permite comprar telas y prendas de ao po´i de las mismas artesanas y disfrutar del ambiente tranquilo de un pueblo idílico paraguayo. Aunque en el pueblo ao po´i está a la venta durante todo el año, durante la Expoferia todas las vendedoras se instalan en la plaza principal. No hay que recorrer todo el pueblo o preocuparse de que la tiendas se cierren durante la siesta.

Without Asunción´s middle men the price for ao po´i products is incredibly low, especially considering the amount of work that goes into each piece. Mens dress shirts range from Gs.60,000 to Gs.70,000 and womens tops are anywhere from Gs. 30,000 to Gs. 70,000 depending on the styles. Tablecloths can range anywhere from Gs. 150,000 to Gs. 2,00,000 depending on the size and intricacy of embroidery.

Al no haber intermediarios Asuncenos de por medio el precio de las prendas de ao po´i es increiblemente económico, especialmente cuando uno considera la cantidad de trabajo que lleva cada prenda. What is ao po’i?
¿Qúe es el ao po´i?

“Ao” (pronounced “ow”) means cloth or clothing in Guaraní and po´i (pronounced “poe – e”) means fine or thin. Ao po´i developed as a result of the isolationist policies of Paraguay´s first post-colonial leader (and dictator) Dr. Gaspar Rodgriguez de Francia. Without access to imported cloth Paraguayan women had to make their own fabric starting with raw cotton which was spun into thread, woven into cloth and later decorated with embroidery. Nowadays much ao po´i cloth is made by machine but still hand sewn and embroidered. There remain a few artesanas who do the entire process by hand. Be sure to visit the “Tejedora del Poyvi” (poyvi = handmade thread) stand in the middle of the left hand side of the Expo to see truly authentic ao po´i.

“Ao” significa tela o ropa en Guaraní y “po´i” significa fino o delgado. El ao po´i se desarrolló a raíz de la política aislacionista de primer líder (y dictador) del Paraguay independiente, Dr. Gaspar Rodriguez de Francia. Sin acceso a telas importadas las mujeres paraguayas tuvieron que fabricar sus propias telas desde cero, hilando el algodón crudo, haciendo la tela en el telar y luego decorándolo con bordados. Hoy en día la mayoría de la tela de ao po´i se hace a máquina pero sigue siendo confeccionado y bordado a mano. Todavía existen algunas artesanas que mantienen la tradición de hacer todo el proceso a mano. Asegurate de visitar el puesto de la “Tejedora del Poyvi” (poyvi = hilo hecho a mano) en el lado izquierdo de la plaza para ver el ao po´i auténtico.

The fine weave and 100% cotton content make ao po´i clothing ideal for the Paraguayan heat. Most ao po´i is made into women’s blouses and dresses and men’s dress shirts. Although ao po´i has been in use for almost two centuries it has only recently come into vogue among the upper classes in Asunción. Shopping Británico is largely responsible for popularizing (and exporting) men´s dress shirts made out of ao po´i (they look similar to guayaberas). Designer Cecilia Fadúl has been a pioneer in popularizing the use of ao po´i in women´s fashions from blouses to wedding dresses. Recently Pombero has come on the scene offering modern youth-oriented designs including strapless dresses and tunics.

El tejido fino y contenido de 100% algodón hacen que la ropa de ao po´i sea ideal para el calor paraguayo. Aunque el ao po´i se ha fabricado por casi dos siglos sólo entró en vogue entre la clase alta de Asunción en los últimos años. La popularización (y exportación) de camisas de vestir masculinas de ao po´i (parecen guayaberas) se debe en gran parte al Shopping Británico. Por su parte, la diseñadora Cecilia Fadúl impulsó el uso de ao po´i en los diseños femeninos desde blusas hasta vestidos de novias. Recientemente Pombero se ha hecho sentir con sus ofrendas de prendas modernas y juveniles incluyendo túnicas y vestidos “strapless.”

Ao po´i tablecloths are also very popular – sometimes they are made of embroidered ao po´i and fancier ones are combined with a form of traditional Paraguayan lace known as encajejy (pronounced “en” – enter – “ca” – cauliflower – “je” – hey – “jy”- you).

Los manteles de ao po´i son bastante populares también – algunos son de ao po´i bordado y los más elegantes combinan el ao po´i con un tipo de encaje tradicional paraguayo conocido como encajejy (pronunciado “encaje – yú”).

Getting there:
By car drive from Ruta 2 to Coronel Oviedo (about 140km) and then head towards Villa Rica on Ruta 8 for about 30km. Follow the Expo Feria signs to Yataity and head to the main plaza. Guaireña buses run to Yataity from Asunción´s bus terminal several times a day. When you call for schedules make sure to mention you want to go all the way to Yataity (some Guaireñas don´t go through town). Also make sure to find out when the last bus leaves.

Como llegar: En auto hay que manejar por Ruta 2 hasta Coronel Oviedo (apróximadamente 140 km) y tomar el desvío hacia Villa Rica en Ruta 8 aproximadamente 30 km. Sigue los letreros para Yataity y dirigíte hacia la plaza principal. Colectivos Guaireña parten de Asunción hacia Yataity varias veces al día desde la terminal de omnibus de Asunción. Al averiguar los horarios (021 551 727 o 555 112) hay que asegurarse de mencionar que quieres entrar al pueblo (algunos colectivos no entran). También asegurate de averiguar a que hora sale el último colectivo.

Staying there:
Yataity is a doable day trip, especially by car or if you take an early bus from Asunción (about 3 1/2 hour trip). If you´d rather take your time you can stay at Granja Ecológica Ñemity at the entrance to town (0971 228 901 or in Asunción 021 512 028). Some people prefer to stay in Villa Rica (17 km away).

Alojamiento:
Es posible ir y volver en un día, especialmente si vas en auto o tomas un colectivo a la mañanita (toma 3 horas y media llegar). Si prefieres tomarte tu tiempo puedes quedarte en la Granja Ecológica Ñemity a la entrada del pueblo (0971 228 901 o al 021 512 028). Hay más opciones en Villa Rica (a 17 km).
