This week marks the start of the International Film Festival in Asunción, now in it´s 19th edition. The festival runs from September 9th to the 30th with screenings at the Shopping Villa Morra movie theater and other locations throughout the city. Take advantage of this opportunity to see movies that are hard to get in Paraguay – even from the pirated DVD vendors!

Going to the movies is very affordable in Asunción- weekday tickets cost Gs.20,000 (approximately US$4) and matinee and Wednesday movies are half price. And from now until the 29th you can see a wide variety of Latin American films for free! The III Muestra de Cine Latinoamericano de Asuncion (Third Latin American Film Series of Asuncion) started on the 16th and runs until the 29th of this month with free nightly screenings. Films start at 8pm and are shown in the Plaza de la Democracia (Independencia Nacional and Olivia). What exactly is “La Expo”? The enormous fair´s full name says it all: “Expo-feria Internacional de Ganadería, Industria, Agricultura, Comercio y Servicios.” That would be the “International Cattle Farming, Industry, Agriculture, Commerce and Services Fair.” Yup, that just about covers it – you can see anything and everything at La Expo. The first Expo took place in 1975 and was held sporadically until 1988 after which point it has been held yearly. Over the course of two weeks droves of people descend upon the “La Rural” fairgrounds to see local and international companies showcase their wares and services and partake in several Expo related activities. There is something for everyone: animal showcases, food and games, business lectures, a Miss Expo Pageant, horseback riding competitions and, this being Paraguay, there is even an official celebration of Mass.

This year´s Expo will be held from July 10th to the 25th. La Rural is located at kilometer 14 of the Ruta Transchaco in Mariano Roque Alonzo, about 20 minutes by car and 40 by bus from the center of Asuncion. Buses running down Avenida Artigas are your best bet and any passing by La Rural should have an “EXPO” sign on display. ¿Exactamente qué es “La Expo”? El nombre oficial lo dice todo : “Expo-feria Internacional de Ganadería, Industria, Agricultura, Comercio y Servicios.” Literalmente lo dice todo, y en serio se puede ver de todo en La Expo. La primera Expo se realizó en 1975 y se llevó a cabo esporádicamente hasta el año 1988, después de la cual La Expo se ha realizado anualmente hasta la fecha. Durante el transcurso de dos semanas manadas impresionantes llenan “La Rural,” el predio de La Expo; visitan los puestos de empresas nacionales e internacionales que están exhibiendo sus productos y servicios y también participan de la variedad de eventos de La Expo. Hay para todos los gustos: exposiciones de animales, juegos y comidas, charlas de negocios, un concurso “Miss Expo,” jineteadas, y, esto siendo Paraguay, hasta hay una celebración oficial de Misa.

Este año La Expo se realizará desde el 10 de julio hasta el 25 de julio. El predio de La Rural se encuentra ubicado en el kilómetro 14 de la Ruta Transchaco en Mariano Roque Alonzo, a unos 20 minutos en auto y 40 en colectivo desde el centro de Asunción. Soccer, soccer, soccer. That is all anyone (including myself) has been able to talk about for the last 2 weeks. Things are looking good for the Paraguayan team (we are leading our group and play New Zealand on Thursday) so maybe it’s time to switch gears from the sporty to the intellectual. This is for all you bookworms out there!

The city´s largest book fair, La Libroferia, will be held from June 24th to July 4th in the parking lot of Shopping Mariscal Lopez. Throughout the course of the fair there will be various activities such as lectures by international authors, educational workshops and theater, dance and musical performances. Some of these will be held in the courtyard of the Centro de Convenciones (ex-Martel factory) behind the mall. The fair is usually held in the center itself but the building Is currently under renovation. This year´s Libroferia is smaller than the last due to the renovations, but there will still be over 70 stands to choose from – that´s a lot of books! So take a break between all the soccer games and head on over to feed your inner book worm!

Fútbol, fútbol, fútbol. Ha sido el único tema de conversación entre la gente en las últimas dos semanas. Las cosas van bien para el equipo paraguayo (somos punteros en nuestro grupo y jugamos contra Nueva Zelanda el jueves) así que quizás es hora de cambiar del tema deportivo a un tema más intelectual. ¡Esto va para todos los ratoncitos de biblioteca!

La feria de libros más grande de la ciudad, llamada La Libroferia, se realizará en el estacionamiento de Shopping Mariscal Lopez desde el 24 de junio hasta el 4 de julio. Durante el transcurso de la feria habrá varias actividades como charlas con autores internacionales, talleres educativos e actos de baile, música y teatro. Algunos de estos eventos se llevarán a cabo en el patio de Centro de Convenciones (ex-fábrica Martel) detrás del shopping. La feria normalmente se realiza en ese edificio pero actualmente está siendo renovado. Por esa razón La Libroferia es más chica que en años pasados, pero igual habrá más de 70 puestos para visitar – ¡son muchos libros! ¡Así que tomate un descanso entre los partidos y visita La Libroferia para alimentar al ratoncito de biblioteca que tienes dentro!

As of this weekend the five northern departments (provinces) of San Pedro, Concepcion, Amambay, Presidente Hayes, and Alto Paraguay have been placed on a thirty day long “estado de excepción” (state of emergency). This move was brought on by a series of incidents concerning the left wing group known as the Ejército del Pueblo Paraguayo or EPP. The EPP has been linked to a handful of high profile kidnappings over the past 10 years, including those of cattle ranchers (“estancieros”) Luis Lindstrom in 2008 and Fidel Zabala in 2009. This month has seen confrontations between the police and an alleged EPP leader in Boquerón, and a shoot out resulting in the deaths of 3 ranch hands and a policeman in the department of Concepción. Under the provisions set forth in the declaration of an “estado de excepción” the military is now able to legally aide police in their anti-EPP operations, thus intensifying search efforts.

What does this mean for foreigners in Paraguay? If you are planning any travels to the departments on alert expect an elevated military presence. Keep ID handy for checkpoints (whether you are traveling by car or bus). As EPP members are rumored to be hiding out in “el monte” (the woods), you might also want to refrain from doing any camping in those areas.

Este fin de semana se declaró un “estado de excepción” por treinta días en los departamentos de San Pedro, Concepción, Amambay, Presidente Hayes, y Alto Paraguay. La medida fue tomada a causa de una serie de incidentes involucrando al grupo izquierdista conocido como el Ejército del Pueblo Paraguayo o el EPP. El EPP ha sido vinculado con unos cuanto sequestros notorios en la última década, incluyendo los de estancieros Luis Lindstrom en el 2008 y Fidel Zabala en el 2009. Este mes hubieron enfrentamientos entre la policía y un supuesto líder del EPP en Boquerón y un tiroteo que resultó en la muerte de tres trabajadores de una estancia y un policía en el Departamento de Concepción. Bajo la ley de excepción las fuerzas militares pueden, legalmente, brindar apoyo a la policía en sus operativos anti-EPP, intensificandose así la búsqueda.

¿Qué significa esto para extranjeros en el Paraguay? Si tienes planes de visitar los departamentos en alerta vas a ver una presencia militar elevada. Ten al alcance tus documentos de identidad para puntos de control (sea tu viaje en colectivo o auto privado). Ya que se dice que los miembros del EPP están escondidos en “el monte,” quizás tampoco sea buena idea acampar en estas áreas.

¿Alguna vez has contemplado la Bahía de Asunción (mejor visto desde un edificio alto en el centro) y te has preguntado que hay por allá? ¿La respuesta? ¡Muchas aves! Para su primera excursión de avistaje de aves del 2010 Guyra Paraguay ha organizado una salida al Club Mbigua, ubicado en la bahía.  El club toma como nombre el ave “mbigua” (Comorán), uno de los cuantiosos aves que habita este Area Importante para la Conservación de Aves. Los que visitan Asunción no deberían dejar pasar la oportunidad de ir a la bahía para disfrutar de la naturaleza paraguaya.  El viaje tomará lugar este sábado, 13 de febrero. Si tienes un candidato/a que es amante de las aves es la oportunidad perfecta para un gesto romántico!
