Paraguayan Christmas songs – Villancicos Paraguayos

With temperatures in the mid to high 30´s (Celcius) Christmas carols about snowmen and sleigh bells may seem out of place in Paraguay. So swap your creamy eggnog for a chilled glass of clericó and check out these Paraguayan carols.

Dos Trocitos de Madera
This song, entitled “Two Pieces of Wood,” was written by Maneco Galeano who also wrote “La Chuchi.” The song´s title is in reference to the pieces of wood that make up the manger of every Paraguayan nativity scene. In true Paraguayan style the song´s lyrics are in Spanish and Guaraní. My favorite verse is the last one where everyone is encouraged to bring chipa, watermelon, oranges and bananas as presents. It wouldn´t be a Paraguayan Christmas without watermelon or chipa!

Ya que la temperatura en Paraguay ronda por los 32-38 grados resulta un poco extraño oir los villancicos que tratan de hombres de nieves y cascabeles (“jingle bells”). Así que es hora de cambiar tu “eggnog” cremoso por un vaso frío de clericó y disfrutar estos villancicos paraguayos.

Esta canción fue escrita por Maneco Galeano quien también escribió “La Chuchi.” El título de la canción se refiere a los pedazos de madera que se usan para formar el techo del establo que forma parte de todo pesebre paraguayo. Al estilo paraguayo las letras de la canción están en castellano y guaraní. Mi verso favorito es el último en la cual se les pide a todos que traigan chipa, sandía, naranjas y bananas como regalos. ¡No sería una Navidad paraguaya sin sandía o chipa!

Harps, harps and more harps! – ¡Arpas, arpas y más arpas!

The time has come once again for the annual Festival Mundial del Arpa (world harp festival), now in its 5th edition. The festival brings together renowned harpists from all over the world (this year including artists from Germany, Argentina, Columbia, Chile, Greece, Italy and Mexico) as well as the best of Paraguay´s home grown talent. This year the festival will take place on October 7th and 8th in Asuncion´s Teatro Municipal (municipal theater) at 8pm and on October 12th at the Costanera (boardwalk) in Encarnacion. Best of all, the concerts are free! It is probably a good idea to show up early to the Teatro Municipal because seats are limited. There is also a festival webpage (http://www.festivalmundialdelarpa.com.py) but it has not been updated as of this writing.

Una vez más llegó la hora del Festival Mundial del Arpa, ahora en su quinto año. El festival reune arpistas conocidos de todo el mundo (este año provienen de Alemania, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Grecia, Italia y México) juntos con los mejores arpistas nacionales. Este año el festival se llevará al cabo el 7 y 8 de octubre en el Teatro Municipal de Asunción a las 20hs y el 12 de octubre en la Costanera de Encarnación. ¡Y lo mejor de todo es que los conciertos son gratuitos! Es buena idea ir temprano al Teatro Municipal por que el cupo es limitado. The Metal March – La Marcha Metal

This Saturday Paraguay´s metalhead community held a march through downtown Asuncion. Yes, you read that correctly, the metalhead community. The march was part of a grassroots campaign to encourage metal band Iron Maiden to include Paraguay in their 2011 tour. It was prompted partly by the band´s declared interest in visiting and playing in Bolivia and inspired by a successful march for Iron Maiden to play in Venezuela. Check out this post on Taringa! for more information on the campaign and a good poster promoting the march. My hats off to the metalheads for their dedication – Saturday was a scorcher and as we all know black clothing is unbearable in the sun.

So if you’re sick of cachaca and can´t handle any more reggaeton now you know there is another music scene in Asuncion: metal!

Este sábado la comunidad metalera de Paraguay organizó una marcha en el centro de Asunción. Sí, leíste correctamente, la comunidad metalera. La marcha fue parte de una campaña comunitaria que tiene como meta convencer al grupo de “metal” Iron Maiden de incluirle a Paraguay en su gira del 2011. Fue parcialmente provocado por el interés declarado del grupo en visitar y tocar en Bolivia, e inspirado por una marcha exitosa para que Iron Maiden toque en Venezuela. Ve esta entrada en Taringa! para más información sobre la campaña y un poster muy bueno promoviendo la marcha. Hay que sacarse el sombrero a los metaleros por su dedicación – hacía un calorázo el sábado y como todos saben la ropa negra es insoportable bajo el sol.

Así que si estás harto del cachaca y no dás más con el regetón ahora ya sabes que hay otra opción musical en Asunción: ¡metal!

The Festival Mundial del Arpa (World Harp Festival) is taking place this week in Asunción. The festival will span from Thursday the 19th to Saturday the 21st and features performances starting at 8:30 each night. As in years past, guest musicians are coming from around the country and the globe, including France, the United States, Mexico, Ireland, Venezuela, Argentina and Colombia. Wondering why is Asuncion hosting a harp festival? Check out this previous post about Paraguayan harp music. The Festival Mundial del Arpa is a perfect venue if you’re curious to hear more of Paraguay’s love of the harp; international acts showcase other styles and traditions. Tickets range from Gs. 15,000 to Gs. 25,000, a real bargain considering this is a small theater and even the nosebleed section has a great view. Tickets are available at the theater itself as well as all Red UTS stands. Now in it´s third year this has become a very popular event so get your tickets early!

All shows will take place in Asuncion’s smartly restored Teatro Municipal (Municipal Theater) located downtown on Presidente Franco between Chile and Alberdi. The Municipal Theater opened in 1889 and was used until 1995 when it was shut down, having been left to deteriorate during many years. Four years of restoration work by the Agencia de Cooperación Española and the Escuela Taller de Asunción brought the theater back to life with beautiful wood floors, original mosaics and exposed brick walls. This Skyscraper City thread has information on the building and its restoration. The building´s bar has a backdrop of a large tiled sheet of marble lit up like a scrim. It is, fittingly, very theatrical. Or perhaps it just feels that way after a bottle of Otro Mundo beer on a hot afternoon in Asuncion.

Todas las funciones se llevarán al cabo en el Teatro Municipal, edificio gozando de una renovación bien pensada. Se ubica en el Centro sobre Presidente Franco entre Chile y Alberdi. El Teatro Municipal se inauguró en 1889 y se usó hasta 1995 cuando años de abandono causaron que se clausure. Cuatro años de trabajos restauración a cargo de la Agencia de Cooperación Española y Escuela Taller de Asunción dieron vida nueva al teatro, ahora con pizos de madera, mosaicos originales, y paredes de ladrillo expuesto. Este hilo de Skyscraper City tiene buena información sobre el edificio y su restauración. El bar tiene como telón de fondo cuadrados enormes de marmól iluminado. Es apropriadamente teátrico. O quizás sólo parece serlo después de una botella de cerveza Otro Mundo en una tarde calurosa en Asunción.

Maiteí América: Harps of Paraguay / Arpas del Paraguay

The harp is one of the most emblematic instruments of Paraguayan music. Paraguayan harpists regularly showcase their talent in venues throughout the country and this November Asunción will host the 3rd International Harp Festival. If you are unable to experience the uplifting sounds of the Paraguayan harp in person check out “Maiteí América: Harps of Paraguay” just released by Smithsonian Folkways. The CD is an excellent collection of songs chosen specifically to highlight the idiosyncracies that make the Paraguayan harp a unique instrument. The CD´s extensive liner notes delve deeply into the history of the Paraguayan harp and explain what makes the instrument itself and songs it creates so special. And the cherry on top? The liner notes are in both English and Spanish!

El arpa es uno instrumento emblemático de la música paraguaya. Arpistas paraguayos demuestran su talento con frequencia en conciertos en todo el país y este noviembre se presentará en Asunción el 3er Festival Mundial del Arpa. Aunque no puedas asistir a un concierto de arpa Paraguaya igual puedes disfrutar de la música animada gracias al disco “Maiteí América: Harps of Paraguay,” recién lanzado por Smithsonian Folkways. El disco es una colección excelente de canciones escogidas específicamente para resaltar las idiosincracias que hacen del arpa paraguaya un instrumento especial capaz de producir melodías distintivas. Las notas del CD se adentran en la historia de la arpa paraguaya y las razones por las cuales el instrumento en sí y las canciones que crea sean tan especiales. ¿Y el broche de oro? ¡Las notas del CD están en Inglés y Español!

The CD features many well-known songs most of which take as their inspiration scenes of Paraguayan countryside. Thus were born songs such as “Carretaguy” (Under the Cart), El “Boyerito” (Little Ox Cart Driver), and “Pájaro Campana” (The Bell Bird). It is no surprise to see a few songs by Félix Perez Cardozo, as he is arguably the most famous Paraguayan composer and harpist. In his song “Tren Lechero” (Milk Train) Cardozo captured the sound and spirit of Paraguay´s steam train (the first in Latin America) on its journey bringing milk to Asunción from the countryside.

El disco contiene muchas canciones conocidas, de las cuales varias tomaron como inspiración escenas del campo paraguayo. Así nacieron composiciones como “Carretaguy” (De bajo de la Carreta), “El Boyerito,” y “Pájaro Campana.” No sorprende que hayan algunas canciones de Félix Pérez Cardozo ya que es uno de los compositores y arpistas más famosos del Paraguay. En su canción “Tren Lechero” Cardozo logró capturar el sonido y espíritud del tren a vapor (primero en Latinoamérica) en su recorrido llevando leche desde el campo paraguayo hasta Asunción.

If you are not familiar with the Paraguayan harp, “Maiteí América” is a perfect introduction to this country´s rich musical tradition. If you have already been to Paraguay the collection makes a great soundtrack for a melodious trip down memory lane.

Paraguay on Frontline – Paraguay en Frontline

In April 2007 Frontline aired a story about Paraguayan musician Luis Szarán and his program “Sonidos de la Tierra” which teaches music to children all over Paraguay. Luis Szarán is the director of Asunción´s Symphony Orchestra and is involved in several musical projects around the country. Luis Szarán es el director de la rquesta Sinfónica de la Ciudad de Asunción y tambíen está involucrado en varios proyectos musicales en todo el país. Guns ‘n Yerba

Here is a TV spot that has started running for Yerba Mate Pajarito. The tag line is “Nada más fresco que probar algo nuevo” which translates into ¨Nothing fresher than trying something new” (or “Nothing more refreshing than trying something new”). It features Juan Cancio Barreto, one of the most well known stars of Paraguayan folkloric music, playing a decidedly un-folkloric song. See if you can guess what it is!

This spot was produced by Oniria who were repsonsible for the Personal Tukae ad I posted about last year. They do a good job of utilizing elements of Paraguayan culture in their campaigns.

Este es un aviso que ha estado pasando por al televisión para Yerba Mate Pajarito. El “tag line” o frase publicitaria es “Nada más fresco que probar algo nuevo.” Muestra a Juan Cancio Barreto, uno de los artistas más conocidos de la música folclórica paraguaya, tocando una canción poco tradicional. ¡A ver si puedes adivinar cual es!

Este aviso fue producido por Oniria, quienes fueron responsables por el aviso Personal Tukae del cual escribí el año pasado. Hacen un buen trabajo de utilizar elementos de la cultura paraguaya en sus campañas.

Luz Maria Bobadilla tonight! – ¡Luz María Bobadilla esta noche!

Tonight Luz Maria Bobadilla will be performing her concert entitled “Mujeres” at the Teatro Municipal (Presidente Franco in between Chile and Alberdi). The concert is being held as a benefit for at-risk adolescent women of Chacaritas, the Asunción shanty town bordering the river. Tickets cost between Gs. 15,000 and Gs. 20,000. The show begins at 8:30pm but it is best not to wait till the last minute to buy tickets. Luz María Bobadilla is one of Paraguay´s most accomplished female guitar players and at this price tickets are sure to go quickly.

This video is from a recent performance of Bobadilla´s in Asunción in honor Mangoré (Agustín Pío Barrios), another famous Paraguayan composer and guitarist.

Festival Internacional del Poncho Pará’í de 60 Listas

Reina Cáceres, author of Poncho Paraguayo: Hilos de Tradición and Historia, Diseños y Colores – Poncho Para´i de 60 Listas, discusses the Paraguayan poncho in Guaraní.

The 8th annual Festival Internacional del Poncho Pará’í de Sesenta Lista is taking place this Friday in Piribebuy (Departamento Cordillera). The festival coincides with the patron saint festivities taking place this weekend in honor of Piribebuy´s Ñandejára Guazú, making this a good time to visit this historic city.

The festival will feature various national musicians including Ricardo Flecha, Giordo Torales, Grupo Generación, and Juan Cancio Barreto who has been mentioned before on this blog and is known for always sporting the traditional “poncho pará’í” (more on that later). Representing the international portion of the festival is Argentine band Aristóbulo del Valle. Dance performances will be given by Grupo Piribebuy Jeroky and the afro-dance troupe Ballet Kamba Kua of Fernando de la Mora.

Aside from music, dancing, and typical Paraguayan foods the festival will feature exhibits regarding and sales of the Poncho Pará’í de 60 Listas which have been made in Piribebuy since the era of Dr. Francia. Traditionally the ponchos are black and white although modern tastes have lead to the incorporation of other colors. Woven out of very fine 100% cotton thread the ponchos are light-weight despite their size. Each has three components: the main body of the poncho, the intricate strip along the entire edge of the poncho called a “faja,” and attached to that the fringe.

In this ABC article, Rosa Segovia (pictured), explains the process of making each poncho. According to her four people working together will work 15 full days to create a poncho. Drive down Rt 2 till km 64 and take the turn off for Piribebuy/Paraguarí (Ruta General Rogelio Benitez) 10 km to downtown Piribebuy. Both roads are paved. Empresa Piribebuy also has buses that leave from the Terminal de Omnibus.

El festival coincide con las fiestas patronales de este fin de semana en honor a Ñandejára Guazú, lo cual hace que esto sea un lindo momento para visitar esta histórica ciudad paraguaya.

El festival incluirá la actuación de muchos músicos nacionales incluyendo a Ricardo Flecha, Grupo Generación, and Juan Cancio Barreto who has been mentioned before on this blog y es conocido por siempre llevar el tradicional “poncho pará’í” (más sobre eso en un momento). Representando la porción internacional del festival es el grupo argentino Aristóbulo del Valle. Además de la música, bailes, y comidas paraguayas típicas el festival incluirá exhibiciones y ventas del Poncho Pará’í de 60 Listas los cuales han sido elaborados en Piribebuy desde la era de Dr. Francia. Tradicionalmente los ponchos son hechos en blanco y negro aunque los gustos modernos han llevado a que se incorporen otros colores. Tejidos de hilo 100% muy fino los ponchos son livianos, a pesar de su tamaño. Tienen tres componentes: el tejido principal del poncho, la cinta intricada que bordea el poncho llamado la “faja,” y unido a este los flecos.
