Paraguay´s First Match – El Primer Partido de Paraguay

As predicted Mundial Fever hit a high this Monday with Paraguay’s first game in the tournament. For Paraguay’s debut in this World Cup they were up against Italy, the reigning champions. Although soccer fans still debate whether Italy actually deserved to win the last World Cup there is no doubt that they are an excellent team and an intimidating rival. The country anxiously awaited Monday´s game showing their team spirit by decking out every available space from billboards to cars and even the streets themselves with red white and blue. And speaking of streets, in the hour before game time they were full of cars racing home (or to a bar) all the while honking in the celebratory staccato rhythms – Beep beep beep…. Beep… beep beep beep!

President Lugo declared Monday afternoon an official half-day holiday for all public employees, correctly anticipating that no one was going to get any work done anyway. For the most part even those without official time off were able to watch the game; many companies make sure to set up televisions for their employees to view key games during the Mundial. Extra nice bosses buy big screen TVs specifically for this purpose. If you don’t have a TV the food courts of malls and supermarkets are good (and cheap) places to watch the World Cup games. Just keep in mind that they will be filled to capacity during Paraguay’s matches. Shopping Villa Morra has a mini viewing theater in their parking lot and Coca Cola has a similar set up in the Plaza de la Democracia.

Tal como predicho la Fiebre del Mundial llegó a su apogeo el lunes con el primer partido de Paraguay. Para su debut a Paraguay le tocó jugar contra Italia, los actuales campeones. Aunque entre los fanáticos del futbol todavía se debate si Italia se merecía ganar el último Mundial no cabe duda que es un equipo excelente y un rival intimidante. El país esperaba ansiosamente el partido del lunes demostrando su apopo decorando de rojo, blanco y azul todos los espacios habidos y por haber – desde letreros a autos y hasta las calles mismas. Y ya que mencionamos las calles, en la hora antes del partido estas se llenaron de autos manejando a toda velocidad hacia sus casas (o algún bar) mientras tocaba la bocina con el festivo ritmo stacatto – Beep beep beep…. Beep… beep beep beep!

El Presidente Lugo declaró asueto para el lunes a la tarde para los empleados públicos, correctamente anticipando que nadie iba a lograr trabajar de cualquier manera. Hasta la mayoría de los que no contaban oficialmente con tiempo libre pudieron ver el partido ya que muchas empresas les ponen televisiones a los empleados para que vean los partidos del Mundial. Jefes super buenos compran televisores de pantalla gigante expresamente para este propósito. Si no tienes televisor los patios de comida de los shopping y supermercados son opciones buenas (y baratas) para ver los partidos. Shopping Villa Morra tiene armado un mini teatro en su estacionamiento y Coca Cola ha creado algo similar en la Plaza de la Democracia.

We watched the “partido” in Mariscal Lopez’s food court along with what seemed like the entire teenaged population of Asunción. Even fleeting shots of star players Nelson Haedo and Roque Santa Cruz were enough to send the girls in the crowd into a screaming frenzy. Everyone was in “albiroja” jerseys and completely amped up, singing and cheering even before the game started. Of course there were many collective groans of disappointment when Paraguay´s attempted goals failed and squeals of fear when the Italian players got too close to Paraguay´s goal. The match was a good one and of course, it was especially satisfying to watch Paraguay score the first goal! Much to everyone´s disappointment Italy made a goal in the second half. The game ended in a tie and everyone seemed happy enough with the outcome – a win would have been better but a tie is definitely better than the other alternative!

The next match is on Sunday the 20th against Slovakia. The game starts at 7:30am. The 20th is also Father´s Day so if you have a Paraguayan father or host father you can give them a gift of a hearty breakfast to eat while they yell and cheer at the TV.

Nosotros vimos el partido en el patio de comidas de Mariscal Lopez Shopping junto con lo que parecía ser todos los jóvenes de Asunción. Cada vez que jugadores Nelson Haedo y Roque Santa Cruz salían en la pantalla todas las chicas se volvían locas. Todos estaban en sus remeras albirojas y super entusiasmados, cantando y alentando al equipo aún antes de que empiece el partido. Por supuesto hubieron muchos gemidos colectivos cuando los intentos del gol de Paraguay fallaban y gritos de miedo cuando los Italianos se acercaban demasiado al arco paraguayo. ¡El partido estaba muy bueno y, por supuesto, fue muy satisfactorio verle a Paraguay meter el primer gol! Desafortunadamente Italia logró meter un gol en el segundo tiempo. El partido terminó en empate y todos parecían estar suficientemente satisfechos con el resultado – ¡hubiera sido mejor ganar pero un empate es mejor que la otra alternativa!

El próximo partido es el domingo 20 de junio contra Slovakia. Se emitirá a las 7:30 de la mañana. El 20 también es el Día del Padre así que si tienes un padre paraguayo puedes hacerle el regalo de un desayuno contundente para comer mientras grita y aplaude frente a la tele.

It´s here, it´s here, the Mundial is here! After four years it is finally back! Where´s your flag, where´s your team spirit? Dale dale dale dale dale dale la Albirooooo, la albirooooo, la albiroooooo oooo oooo oooo oooo oooo!!

If you think that is an overreaction just wait to see how all everyone around you starts acting when the Soccer World Cup, known as the “Mundial” starts on June 11th. There is currently a commercial on TV hawking “Sports Fan” deodorant that depicts everyone in the world turning into soccer obsessed zombies. This is only a slight exaggeration. Almost without exception all Paraguayans will be wrapped up in the national team´s Mundial performance. The ad did get one thing wrong though: people don´t turn into sleep-walking zombies, they turn into crazy, hyper-energized fans. I should point out this happens to everyone, men, women, teenagers and older folks alike. Gathering around with friend and family to watch a game don´t be surprised when an otherwise demure abuelita (granny) starts swearing at the ref!

¡Llegó, llegó, finalmente llegó el Mundial! ¡Después de cuatro años ya está de vuelta! ¿Dónde está tu bandera, dónde está tu espíritu de hincha? ¡¡Dale dale dale dale dale dale la Albirooooo, la albirooooo, la albiroooooo oooo oooo oooo oooo oooo!!

Si eso te parece una reacción desmesurada espera no más a ver como todos a tu alrededor empezarán a actuar el 11 de junio cuando se inicia el Mundial. Actualmente hay una propaganda en la televisión para un desodorante “Sports Fan” en el cual todo el mundo se convierte en zombies obsesionados con el fútbol. Esto representa una exageración muy leve. Casi sin excepción el país entero estará absorto con en rendimiento del equipo paraguayo durante el Mundial. La propaganda sí se equivocó en un aspecto: la gente no se vuelve zombis somnolientos; se vuelven fanáticos locos e híperenergizados. Cabe mencionar que esto le ocurre a todos, ya sean hombres, mujeres, jóvenes, o gente mayor. ¡Si te vas a reunir con una familia paraguaya para ver los partidos no te sorprendas si una abuelita (normalmente recatada) empieza a caragearle al árbitro!

The countdown to the mundial is on – quite literally. For months now the nation´s newspapers have had countdowns on their front pages and there are electronic countdowns on billboards around the country as well. Now that we are down to the final days advertisers are amping up their Mundial-related promotions. Expect to be deluged with last minute offers for big screen TVs and Mundial giveaways in the paper, on tv and radio, and even via text message.

Paraguay´s team suffered a huge setback in January when star player Salvador Cabañas was shot in the head in a Mexico City nightclub. Miraculously he survived and has started recovering, although it is doubtful he will every play again. The nation´s hopes now ride on the rest of the team which includes star players Roque Santa Cruz and Nelson Haedo, among others. So find yourself some red, white and blue clothing, figure out where you´ll be watching the games, and get ready to chant your support for the “Albiroja” to the tune of Culture Club´s “Karma Chameleon.” Don´t ask why, just sing!

La cuenta regresiva al Mundial ya está en marcha, literalmente. Desde hace meses los periódicos nacionales tienen cuentas regresivas en sus portadas y hasta hay cuentas regresivas electrónicas por carteleras publicitarias en todo el país. Ahora que estamos en los últimos días las empresas están dándole con todo a sus promociones para el Mundial. Te inundarán con ofertas de último momento para televisores de pantalla gigante, rifas, etc en la tele, radio y hasta por mensaje de texto.

El equipo paraguayo sufrió un golpe enorme en enero cuando uno de sus jugadores más importantes, Salvador Cabañas, fue baleado en la cabeza en una discoteca de México DF. Milagrosamente sobrevivió y se está recuperando pero es dudoso que vuelva a jugar otra vez. La esperanza de toda la nación queda con el resto del equipo que incluye jugadores astros como Roque Santa Cruz y Nelson Haedo, entre otros. Así que empieza a buscar alguna ropa rojo, blanco y azul, decide donde estarás viendo los partidos, y alistate a demostrar tu apoyo cantándole a la “Albiroja” al son de “Karma Cameleon” de Culture Club. ¡No preguntes ´por qué,´ canta no más!

Paraguay’s going to the World Cup! – ¡Paraguay va al Mundial!

Last night Paraguay´s national soccer team defeated Argentina 1 to 0 in Asunción´s Estadio Defensores del Chaco. Soccer matches in Latin America are taken very seriously, especially when they are played on a national level. This game was even more significant due to the rivalry between Paraguay and Argentina, aluded to at all times by the “barra brava.” The “barra brava” is the section of rabid fans who usually cheer and heckle from behind the goal area. They are in charge (formally or informally, I´m not sure) of chanting along with drums- last night they were silent for only 5 minutes throughout the entire game.

Anoche el equipo de fútbol paraguayo ganó contra Argentina 1 a 0 en el Estadio Defensores del Chaco de Asunción. Se toman en serio los partidos de fútbol en latinoamérica, especialmente cuando se tratan de partidos nacionales. Este partido en particular fue significante dada la rivalidad entre Paraguay y Argentina. La barra brava aludió a dicha rivalidad en todo momento. La barra brava es un grupo de super fanáticos que normalmente gritan y aplauden en el área detrás del gol. Están encargados (formalmente o informalmente, no lo sé) de cantar al son de tambores. Anoche estuvieron sin cantar sólo 5 minutos durante todo el partido.

Of course most chants were aimed at the Argentine team including this hilarious gem (no offense meant on my part to Argentine fans, I´m just writing what the “barra brava” sang):

Por supuesto la mayoría de sus cantos se dirigían al equipo argentino, incluyendo esta joya chistosa (sin intención de ofender a los fanáticos argentinos, sólo estoy escribiendo lo que cantó la “barra brava”):

“¡Yo soy Paraguayo, me gusta la cerveza y el asado, kurepa come-gato pelot*do, metete el Obelisco en el c*lo!” Uy.

“I´m Paraguayan, I like beer and asado (barbeque), cat-eating kurepa (Argentine), stick the Obelisk up your a**!” Ouch.

With this win Paraguay has officially classified for the 2010 World Cup to be held in South Africa next June and July. Travel agencies in Paraguay are already selling tour packages to cheer on the national team throughout South Africa. If you will be in Paraguay during the World Cup plan on catching a game at a local bar to get a taste of “Mundial Fever.” Today President Lugo gave all public employees the day off on account of last night´s win. Who knows, if Paraguay makes it to the final everyone might get a whole week off!

Con esta victoria Paraguay ha clasificado oficialmente al Mundial 2010 en Sudáfrica. Se llevará al cabo el próximo junio y julio. Agencias de viajes en Paraguay ya estan vendiendo paquetes para hinchar al equipo nacional en Sudáfrica. Si estarás en Paraguay durante el Mundial hay que hacer planes para ver un partido desde un bar. Así sentirás lo que es la “Fiebre del Mundial.” Hoy Presidente Lugo les dió asueto a todos los empleados públicos a causa de la victoria de anoche. ¡¿Quién sabe, si Paraguay llega al final quizás todos tendrán una semana de vacaciones?!

Transchaco Rally Controversy – Controversia sobre el Rally Transchaco

This year´s Transchaco Rally started over two weeks behind schedule amid the controversy of a possible cancellation due to environmental concerns. Depending on who you talk to the Trans-Chaco Rally is a hard-core sporting event designed to test the limits of any driver or a excuse for rich ¨chuchi¨people to go out and have a massive orgy in the Chaco leaving destroyed native communities and empty beer bottles in their wake. SEAM (the Secretaria del Ambiente) threatened to cancel the rally if certain environmental requirements were not met but seemed to back off rather quickly and in the end the Rally was allowed to take place. Hopefully environmental concerns will be taken into account for next year´s Rally.

Este año el Transchaco Rally fue postergada debido a acusaciones de los daños ambientales que causa. Dependiendo de con quien hablas el Transchaco Rally es un espectáculo deportivo super exigente o una excusa para que los ricos de Paraguay armen un kilombo e tengan orgías en el Chaco dejando tras ellos basura en cantidades y destruyendo comunidades indigenas a cada paso. SEAM (la Secretaría del Ambiente) amenazó con cancelar el Rally si los organizadores no cumplieran con ciertos requisitos. Pero algunos dicen que fue un caso de mucho ruido y pocas nueces ya que al fin se les ortorgó la licencia (de una manera sospechosamente repentina) y el Rally siguió como siempre. Ojalá que este año sea un primer paso y que los organizadores del evento tomen en cuenta su impacto ambiental al planear el Rally del próximo año.

Fuerza Paraguay! Buuuaaa, mi celu!!!

I was waiting for something cool to happen before starting to blog about Paraguay and it finally happened. Yesterday Paraguay won their soccer match against Peru maintaining their lead over the other Latin American teams in the elimination rounds for the World Cup in 2010 (aahhhhh!! I can’t wait!). Though it was hot as hell going to the game in the Estadio Defensores del Chaco in Sajonia was totally worth it. The game itself was so-so – Peru is a weak team and so far Paraguay has been in the lead so why did it take until the last 10 minutes for the “abliroja” to make a goal? In the end no one cares because we won!

After the game everyone went to the Plaza de los Heroes to celebrate. I imagine that all the heroes in the pantheon are happy they get to celebrate all soccer victories with their descendents! The plaza was full of revellers including about 20 Peace Corps Volunteers in from the campo, and unfortunately for me, a fair number of pirañitas. “Pirañitas” is Paraguayan slang for street urchins who stick their hand in your pocket, grab your cell phone and make a run for it through the crowds before disappearing into the Las Chacaritas slum down by the river… at least in my case. Fortunately it was just a phone and the frustration of loosing it was quickly erased with a few cans of “milk” (see below).

Some tips for going to a soccer game:

Don´t take any tereré thermoses, bags, or even belts since they are not allowed in the stadium.
Nor are clandestine bottles of caña but they manage to get in (note: women get searched less than men.)
Try to steer clear of the ¨barra brava¨section – things can get crazy there.
Someone will run down the steps pulling one end of an enormous flag at least 5 times during the game. When you see him coming get the hell out of the way fast.
When it comes to the post game celebration if you go somewhere crowded watch your pockets.
Due to a totally ignored law against selling beer at the stadium all the vendors sell “leche” instead.

¡He estado esperando que algo espectacular ocurra para inagurar mi “blog” acerca del Paraguay y finalmente ocurrió! Ayer Paraguay ganó el partido contra Perú y así logró mantenerse puntero en las eliminatorias para el Mundial del 2010 (¡yyyiiiuuupiii! ¡Ya quiero que llegue!). Aunque hacía un calor de la gran siete valió la pena asistir al partido en el Estadio Defensores del Chaco en Sajonia. El partido en sí fue más o menos – Perú es un equipo débil y hasta ahora a Paraguay le ha ido muy bien, asique por qué le tomó al Albiroja hasta los últimos diez minutos del partido para meter un gol? ¡Bueno, a la final a nadie le importa porque ganamos!

Después del partido todos fueron a la Plaza de los Héroes para celebrar. Me imagino que los héroes del panteón estarán contentos de poder celebrar cada victoria de fútbol con sus descendientes y paisanos! La plaza estaba llena de celebrantes de la victoria, incluyendo unos 20 Voluntarios del Cuerpo de Paz y para mala suerte mía una buena cantidad de “pirañitas.” En Paraguay se les dice “pirañitas” a los chicos de la calle que meten sus manos en tu bolsillo, te quitan el celular y van corriendo por la muchedumbre hasta desaparecer en la villa de Las Chacaritas a las orillas del río… bueno, así fue en mi caso. Afortunadamente sólo fue un celular y la frustración al haberlo perdido desapareció después de unos cuantos “leches” (mirar abajo).

Algunos consejos para asistir a un partido de fútbol:

No lleves termos de tereré, bolsas, y hasta cintos ya que no son permitidos dentro del estadio.
Tampoco se permiten botellas de caña clandestinas pero de alguna manera logran entrar (nota: a los hombres se les revisa más que a las mujeres)
Intenta evitar la sección de la barra brava – las cosas se puede poner.. bueno, bravas!
Por lo menos 5 veces durante el partido alguien bajará corriendo los escalones agarrando la esquina de una bandera enorme. Cuando le veas bajando sálte del camino de inmediato!
A la hora de celebrar después del partido si estás entre mucha gente cuida tus bolsillos.
Gracias a una ley totalmente ignorada contra la venta de cerveza se vende mucha ¨leche.¨
