Nothing says “summer” like a trip to the beach to soak up some sun and splash in the water. And, believe it or not, you can get your fill of beach time this summer right here, in Paraguay. Yes, Paraguay is a landlocked country , there are a handful of beaches on the shores of rivers and lakes. San Bernardino and Villa Florida are perennial favorites among summer vacationers but here are Some other destinations along with ideas for how they might fit in to a larger trip.

Nada habla más de “verano” que un viaje a la playa para gozar del sol, agua y arena. Y, aunque no lo creas, puedes saciar tu antojo de playa aquí mismo, en el Paraguay. Sí, Paraguay es un país mediterraneo, pero existen playas en las riberas de ríos y lagos. San Bernardino y Villa Florida son favoritos entre veraneantes pero estos son otros destinos junto con ideas sobre cómo integrarlos a un itinerario más extenso:

Encarnación (Dept. Itapua)

Known as the “Perla del Sur” (Pearl of the South) Encarnación is fast becoming one of Paraguay´s hottest summer vacation spots thanks to the newly inaugurated “Costanera” project. Using funds from the Yacyretá hydroelectric dam the city has created eight kilometers of riverside roads and boardwalks, three kilometers of which are sandy beaches. Encarnación is a great base of operations for a fun summer trip. If you´re looking for a dose of culture head to the nearby Jesuit Ruins. If you´d rather party after the sun goes down visit during Carnaval season (this year from Jan 21st – Feb 18th). From Encarnacion you can easily head over the border to Argentina (crossing in to the city of Posadas) or travel north on Rt. 6 through Paraguay’s yerba mate production region to Ciudad del Este and continue on to Iguazu Falls. When finalized the Costanera is projected to be 27 kilometers long, so hopefully there will be even more beaches to enjoy in the future.

Travel info: Encarnación is at the end of Rt. 1, 370 kilometers from Asuncion and easily accessible by bus (tickets cost between Gs. 60,000 and Gs.70,000) and car. Recommended hotels include Hotel Germano (simple and cheap, Tel: 071 203 346), Hotel Arthur, and Hotel Tirol. Advanced reservations are required during Carnaval season.

Encarnación (Dept. Itapua)

Conocido como “La Perla del Norte Sur” Encarnación está convirtiendose rápidamente uno de los sitios turísticos más importantes del verano paraguayo. Esto se debe al recientemente inaugurado proyecto “Costanera.” Utilizando fondos de la represa hidroeléctrica Yacyreta, la ciudad ha construido ocho kilómetros de costanera, la cual incluye tres kilómetros de playas. Encarnación es una buena base de operaciones para un viaje de verano. Si buscas una dósis de cultura puedes visitar las ruinas jesuíticas cercanas. Si quieres seguir farreando después de la puesta del sol planea visitar durante los carnavales (este año son del 21 de enero hasta el 18 de febrero). Desde Encarnación es muy fácil cruzar a Posadas, Argentina. O también se puede viajar al norte por Rt. 6, atravezando la zona de producción de yerba mate, hasta Ciudad del Este y de allí continuar a las Cataratas de Iguazú. Este post del fotoblog paraguayo Cazador de Instantes contiene fotos muy lindas de Encarnación, y hacia el final de la página hay fotos de la Playa San José (las otras dos playas de Encarnación se llaman San Isidro y Mbói Ka’é.) Se estima que al completarse el proyecto habrán 27 kilómetros de costanera así que hay esperanza de que habrán aún más playas para disfrutar en el futuro.

Información para viajeros: Encarnación se encuentra a la final de Rt. 1, a 370 kilómetros de Asunción y fácilmente accesible en colectivo (pasaje es entre Gs. 60,000 y Gs. 70,000) y auto. Rancho Laguna Blanca, Santa Rosa del Aguaray (Dept. San Pedro)

With its picturesque white sandy beach and thatched “umbrellas” Laguna Blanca is often featured in Paraguay´s tourism pamphlets, and rightly so. The lake is pristine, with crystal clear waters and a shallow beach perfect for sunbathing adults and frolicking children. There are kayaks and rowboats for those who want to venture in to deeper water and ample opportunities to spot the area´s unique birdlife (the area was recently declared a nature reserve and the nature conservation NGO Para La Tierra operates on the premises). Though there are rustic guest accommodations this is a fun spot for beach camping. Only 100 people are allowed at a time (advanced reservations are required) and during the week it can feel like you are on your own private beach. More information at www.lagunablanca.com.py

Travel info: Laguna Blanca is located approximately 300 kilosmeters from Asunción along Rt. 3 and is accessible by car and, with a little advanced planning, by bus. If traveling by bus take a bus headed to either Concepción (via Rt. 3, not via the Trans Chaco – this is important to verify when buying the tickets) or Pedro Juan Caballero. Get off at Santa Rosa del Aguaray (270 kms from Asunción), then catch either a local bus or a taxi for the remaining 27 kilometers to Laguna Blanca. Check here for more information on local buses so you can get the timing right. There are no options for purchasing food nearby so plan on either bringing your own food to cook over the fire or paying for full room and board.

Rancho Laguna Blanca, Santa Rosa del Aguaray (Dept. San Pedro)

La playa pintoresca de Laguna Blanca, con su arena blanca y “sombrillas” de paja, son fotografiadas con frequencia para los folletos de turismo paraguayos. Y con justa razón. El lago el es precioso, sus aguas cristalinas y su playa poco profunda son perfectas para que adultos tomen el sol y niños jugueteen. Hay kayaks y un bote chiquito para los que prefieran lanzarse a aguas más profundas. Los amantes de la naturaleza disfrutarán de la vista y de las cuantiosas oportunidades para ver aves de la zona (el sitio fue recientemente declarado reserva natural y la ONG de conservación a la naturaleza Para La Tierra tiene su base de operaciones en el rancho). Aunque hay habitaciones rústicas, es muy lindo acampar en la playa. Sólo se permiten 100 personas a la vez (hay que hacer reservas con anticipación) y durante la semana puedes llegar a sentir que estás en tu propia playa privada. Información para viajeros: Laguna Blanca queda a aproximadamente 300 kilómetros de Asunción por Rt. 3 y es accesible en auto y, con planeación previa, por colectivo. Si viajas en colectivo hay que tomar uno que va hacia Concepción (por Rt. 3, no por el Transchaco – es importante aclarar cuando compras tu pasaje). Baja en Santa Rosa del Aguaray (a 270 kms de Asunción) y haz el último tramo de 27 kilómetros en taxi o colectivo local. Aqui hay información sobre los colectivos locales para que puedas coordinar bien tu viaje. No hay opciones cercanas para comprar comida así que hay que traer tu propia comida para preparar a la parilla, o pedir pensión completa.

Playa Dorada, Puerto Vallemí (Dept. Concepción)

Just in case Laguna Blanca isn´t secluded enough for you. Playa Dorada is located at the very northeastern tip of Eastern Paraguay at the confluence of the Río Paraguay and Río Apa. Brazil is just across the river, but there is no formal crossing point. Walking along this long stretch of remote beach, it can truly feel like you are the only person around (though there is a tiny Brazilian military base on the other side). Be careful when swimming though as there are fresh water sting rays – how much more of an adventure can you ask for? If you´ve headed to Vallemí in order to catch the Aquidaban as it travels upriver to Bahía Negra (more about this trip here) then visiting Playa Dorada will make for a good excursion.

Travel Info: 600 kilometers from Asuncion, Vallemí is accessible by car, bus or boat, though the trip isn´t particularly easy. By car head north to Concepción and then take the dirt road that leads 200kms north to Vallemí (it is slowly being paved). There are daily buses from Concepción to Vallemí as well (Gs. 60,000). There are two passenger boats that stop in Vallemí, with the trip downriver being faster and a little less crowded. The Cacique II departs from Asunción on Tuesday nights arriving in Vallemí Friday afternoon and heads back to Asunción on Friday night. The Aquidaban departs from Concepción on Tuesday morning, arrives in Vallemí on Wednesday midday and continues to Bahía Negra. On its return trip it stops in Vallemí on Saturday afternoon. Travel on either boat falls under the categories of “adventure” and “roughing it.” Playa Dorada is about 8 kilometers from Vallemí and the best way to get there is to borrow or rent a motorcycle from someone in town.

Playa Dorada, Puerto Vallemí (Dept. Concepción)

Por si acaso Laguna Blanca no es suficientemente remota para tu gusto. Playa Dorada se ubica en el punto más noreste de Paraguay Oriental en la confluencia del Río Paraguay y el Río Apa. Brasil queda al otro costado del río pero no hay cruce formal. Caminando por este largo trecho de playa aislada puedes sentir que sos el único ser humano en la zona (aunque en verdad hay un pequeño destacamento militar Brazilero al otro lado del río). Ten cuidado al nadar ya que hay rayas en el agua – ¿cuanto más aventura quieres? Si estás en Vallemí porque esperas el Aquidaban para ir a Bahía Negra (más información aquí) puedes tomar una excursión a Playa Dorada.

Información para Viajeros: A 600 kilómetros de Asunción, Vallemí es accesible por auto, colectivo o barco, aunque el viaje no es muy fácil. En auto hay que viajar a Concepción y de allí seguir por el camino de tierra (siendo lentamente asfaltada) que lleva 200 kms al norte hasta Vallemí. Hay colectivos diarios desde Concepción hasta Vallemí (Gs. 60,000). Hay dos barcos que paran en Vallemí y el viaje río abajo es más rápido y con menos gente. El Cacique II parte de Asunción los martes de noche y llega a Vallemí los viernes de tarde. Retorna a Asunción los viernes de noche. El Aquidaban parte de Concepción los martes de mañana, para en Vallemí los miércoles al medio día y continua hacia Bahía Negra. En su retorno para en Vallemí los sábados. Viajar en cualquiera de ellos cae bajo el rubro de “aventura” y de también de “viajar sin comodidad ni uno.” Playa Dorada queda a 8 kilómetros de Vallemí y la mejor manera de llegar es prestando o alquilando una moto de alguien en el pueblo.

Entrance to Asuncion´s first backpacker hostel - Entrada al primer hostal para mochileros en Asucnión

Visitors to Asuncion may notice a difference between this city and other Latin American capitals: there are very few backpackers in Asuncion.   While backpackers flock to  countries such as Brazil, Bolivia and Argentina, very few make their way to neighboring Paraguay.  As a result there were no hostels in Asuncion until very recently.   Now Asuncion boasts two hostels  (see contact information below) and, according to “radio so’o,” there are more to come.  Does this mean Paraguay is becoming more popular among backpackers doing the Latin American circuit?  Visit the Discovering Paraguay Facebook page and share your experience at either hostel as well as your thoughts on Paraguay as a backpacker destination!

As of this weekend the five northern departments (provinces) of San Pedro, Concepcion, Amambay, Presidente Hayes, and Alto Paraguay have been placed on a thirty day long “estado de excepción” (state of emergency). This move was brought on by a series of incidents concerning the left wing group known as the Ejército del Pueblo Paraguayo or EPP. The EPP has been linked to a handful of high profile kidnappings over the past 10 years, including those of cattle ranchers (“estancieros”) Luis Lindstrom in 2008 and Fidel Zabala in 2009. This month has seen confrontations between the police and an alleged EPP leader in Boquerón, and a shoot out resulting in the deaths of 3 ranch hands and a policeman in the department of Concepción. Under the provisions set forth in the declaration of an “estado de excepción” the military is now able to legally aide police in their anti-EPP operations, thus intensifying search efforts.

What does this mean for foreigners in Paraguay? If you are planning any travels to the departments on alert expect an elevated military presence. Keep ID handy for checkpoints (whether you are traveling by car or bus). As EPP members are rumored to be hiding out in “el monte” (the woods), you might also want to refrain from doing any camping in those areas.

Este fin de semana se declaró un “estado de excepción” por treinta días en los departamentos de San Pedro, Concepción, Amambay, Presidente Hayes, y Alto Paraguay. La medida fue tomada a causa de una serie de incidentes involucrando al grupo izquierdista conocido como el Ejército del Pueblo Paraguayo o el EPP. El EPP ha sido vinculado con unos cuanto sequestros notorios en la última década, incluyendo los de estancieros Luis Lindstrom en el 2008 y Fidel Zabala en el 2009. Este mes hubieron enfrentamientos entre la policía y un supuesto líder del EPP en Boquerón y un tiroteo que resultó en la muerte de tres trabajadores de una estancia y un policía en el Departamento de Concepción. Bajo la ley de excepción las fuerzas militares pueden, legalmente, brindar apoyo a la policía en sus operativos anti-EPP, intensificandose así la búsqueda.

¿Qué significa esto para extranjeros en el Paraguay? Si tienes planes de visitar los departamentos en alerta vas a ver una presencia militar elevada. Ten al alcance tus documentos de identidad para puntos de control (sea tu viaje en colectivo o auto privado). Ya que se dice que los miembros del EPP están escondidos en “el monte,” quizás tampoco sea buena idea acampar en estas áreas.

There are many things about the Chaco that seem like a mystery. Chief among them for adventurous tourists may be how to cross the Paraguay-Bolivia border.

Hay muchos misterios en el Chaco. Para los turistas aventureros quizás el misterio más grande sea como cruzar la frontera de Paraguay y Bolivia.

Getting to the border:
On the Paraguayan side the closest town to the border is Mariscal Estigarribia. It is 230kms from Mayor Infante Rivarola (the official border crossing), about 140 kms from Filadelfia (the most accesible of the region´s mennonite colonies), and 530 kms from Asunción. There are several bus lines that make the journey from Asunción up the Trans Chaco Highway to Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Stel Turismo (tel. Asunción: 021 551 647) and Yacyretá (tel. Asunción: 021 551 725) make the most frequent trips. Should you choose to visit the mennonite colonies before heading to Bolivia you will have to make your way to Mariscal Estigarribia (Nasa, tel. 0491 432492, runs daily buses from Filadelfia) in order to catch a Santa Cruz bus. Tickets to Santa Cruz cost the same (about 40 USD) whether you depart from Asunción or points north. I have been told that if you are heading to Tupiza or Uyuni in Bolivia it is easier to go to Santa Cruz and take a bus from there than to attempt to make a connection in Villamonte.

Como llegar a la frontera:
La ciudad más cercana a la frontera del lado paraguayo es Mariscal Estigarribia. Queda a 230 kms de Mayor Infante Rivarola (el cruce oficial en la frontera misma), a 140kms de Filadelfia (el más accesible de las colonias menonitas de la región), y a 530 kms de Asunción. Hay varias empresas de transporte que hacen el viaje desde Asunción hasta Santa Cruz, Bolivia, por la Ruta Trans Chaco. Stel Turismo (tel. Asunción: 021 551 647) y Yacyretá (tel. Asunción: 021 551 725) hacen los viajes más frequentes. Si deseas visitar las colonias menonitas antes de seguir hacia Bolivia tendrás que ir hasta Mariscal Estigarriba (Nasa, tel. 0491 432492, tiene salidas diarias desde Filadelfia) para tomar un colectivo rumbo a Santa Cruz. El precio del viaje no varía si te subes en Asunción o por el camino. Según lo que me han contado si uno busca llegar a Tupiza o Uyuni en Bolivia es más fácil ir hasta Santa Cruz y hacer el trasborde allí que intentar hacer la conexción en Villamonte.

Getting your passport stamped:
All buses headed to Bolivia make an obligatory stop at the well-lit 24 hour customs (“aduanas”) checkpoint in Mariscal Estigarribia. Most buses from Asunción arrive between the hours of 2am and 4am. While the bus is waiting at customs it is your responsibility to get stamped into or out of Paraguay. This is done at the Immigration Office housed in a small building next door (tel: 0494 247 315). This office is open 24 hours a day. If it appears closed you might have to bang on the door loudly – there is a back room immigration officials stay in during downtime.

Consiguiendo el sello en tu pasaporte:
Todos los colectivos rumbo a Bolivia hacen una parada obligatoria en el puesto de control de Aduanas en Mariscal Estigarribia. Está abierto las 24 horas del día y está bien iluminado de noche. La mayoría de los colectivos de Asunción llegan entre las 2hs y 4hs de la madrugada. Mientras el colectivo es procesado en Aduanas es tu responsabilidad conseguir tu sello de salida de o entrada al Paraguay. Esto se hace en la Oficina de Migraciones que se encuentra en un pequeño edificio al costado de Aduanas (tel: 0494 247 315). La oficina está abierta las 24 horas del día. Si parece estar cerrado quizás tengas que golpear fuertemente – hay una habitación en la parte trasero donde los oficiales de migraciones descansan cuando no hay actividad.

Regarding Visas:
Tourist visas for Paraguay are not for sale at this, or any other, border crossing. If you need a visa for Paraguay (attention, Americans) you must obtain it before attempting to enter the country.

En cuanto a Visas:
Visas para Paraguay no estan a la venta en esta oficina ni en cualquier otro cruce fronterizo. Si necesitas una visa para Paraguay (atención, americanos) tienes que obtenerlo antes de intentar entrar al país.

Some things to consider before you take off:
The entire Paraguay side of the journey (to Bolivia) occurs at night. Mariscal Estigarribia is about 8 hours from Asunción and about 2 from Filadelfia – you may want to set an alarm just in case. Also, given that it will be dark, you won´t be able to see any of the Chaco. If you want to experience the Paraguayan Chaco consider taking a trip beforehand to Filadelfia or Parque Nacional Teniente Enciso and then going to Mariscal Estigarribia to catch the bus. Make arrangements with the bus agency ahead of time so they know to reserve you a seat. The bus drivers are allowed to sell you tickets when they arrive to Mariscal Estigarribia.

Algunos temas a considerar antes de viajar:
El tramo paraguayo del viaje a Santa Cruz se hace de noche. Mariscal Estigarribia queda a 8 horas de Asunción y a 2 de Filadelfia – quizás quieras poner una alarma por si acaso. Además, dado a que será de noche, no podrás ver mucho del Chaco. Si quieres tener la experiencia chaqueña será mejor hacer un viaje a Filadelfia o Parque Nacional Teniente Enciso de antemano y después tomar el colectivo en Mariscal Estigarribia. Coordiná con la empresa de antemano asi ellos saben que deben reservarte un asiento. Los choferes tienen permiso para vender pasajes al llegar a Mariscal Estigarribia.

If you plan on catching the bus from Mariscal Estigarribia consider staying at Hotel Laguna (0494 247 358) beforehand. It is about 1.5 kms from the Immigration office. Hotel Laguna also functions as an office of Yacyreta bus line. If you buy your ticket with them ahead of time (in the afternoon at the latest)they will notify the Yacyreta office in Asunción so the bus can pick you up at the hotel. If you choose to do this it is extremely important to go to the Immigration Office ahead of time and obtain your exit stamp. By the time it gets to Hotel Laguna the bus will already have passed the Immigration and Customs – so make sure you have your stamp before getting on the bus at Hotel Laguna.

Si piensas subir al colectivo en Mariscal Estigarribia considera quedarte en Hotel Laguna (0494 247 358) de antemano. Queda unos 1.5 kms de la oficina de Migraciones. Hotel Laguna también opera como la oficina de la empresa de transporte Yacyreta. Si compras tu pasaje con anticipación (esa tarde a más tardar) coordinarán con la oficina de Yacyreta en Asunción para que el colectivo te recoga del hotel mismo. Si haces esto es extremadamente importante que ya hayas ido a la Oficina de Migraciones para obtener tu sello. Cuando llegue al Hotel Laguna el colectivo ya habrá pasado por Migraciones y Aduanas – asique asegurate de tener tu sello antes de subir al colectivo en Hotel Laguna.

Today is Discovering Paraguay’s one-year anniversary. Many thanks to everyone for all the support throughout this first year of writing about Paraguay! As research for the guidebook I am writing about Paraguay I have spent the last year exploring the country visiting the “must-sees” as well as a fair share of the “never-heard-of-there-befores.” On this special occassion I’d like to share some tips for making the most of the diverse experiences Paraguay offers travelers.

Be Flexible:
It will make everything easier. In Paraguay, as in other “underdeveloped” nations, departure and arrival times are approximate (this also aplies to store and office hours). It is especially important to confirm bus itineraries as things may change (see following section on weather). Make sure your travel plans include some wiggle room to compensate for broken down buses or missed connections.

Work around the weather:
Paraguayans’ daily routines are built around the weather. People rise early to make the most of the cool morning hours. When the sun is at it’s strongest it is time for a siesta. Even in urban areas many businesses close for lunch/siesta. Take your cues from the locals and plan to take a break during the day’s hottest hours. Take refuge inside an air-conditioned restaurant or cyber cafe, or in a shady plaza. If you have business to attend to it is best to do so during the morning shift as sometimes people decide not to return after siesta. Depending on the road conditions rain can affect your travel plans. In areas with cobblestone or asphalted roads a rainstorm can mean a couple of hours of flooded streets. In rural areas prolonged rain may temporarily turn stretches of dirt roads into unpassable mud pits.

Don’t be shy, talk to people:
In Paraguay you will have much better luck looking for information in person than online. Some companies and hotels have websites but they are not necessarily up to date. This can be frustrating but it does have the benefit of pushing you to interact with locals. When requesting information you should be prepared for some preliminary chit-chatting. Of course there are always people who prefer to provide a made up answer than no answer at all. Directions that end in “and ask for directions again there” are common. It is a good idea to ask multiple people and weight your conclusions accordingly. Also keep in mind that a majority of Paraguayans do not have constant internet access but almost everyone has a cell phone. If you cannot ask in person and need a quick response calling or text-messaging is preferable to email.

Learn some Guarani words:
Many people are intimidated with new languages but the beauty of the Guarani/Spanish dynamic is the two are regularly interwoven so it is perfectly fine to just throw in the words you know when possible. It will send the sign that you are interested in the culture and get you mega brownie points. A well timed “ndaipori problema” (meaning “no problem” or “it’s all good”) is guaranteed to elicit a smile, at the very least. Personally I have noticed a significant difference in the way I am recieved and the information I get if I start off any conversation with “mbaeichapa” (“how are you?”) and then throw in whatever else I can throughout.

Visit the countryside:
In Paraguay, as in the rest of the world, there is a great difference between life in urban and rural areas. Especially in well-off areas, Asunción is a world away from the rest of the country. If you only stick to Asuncion you will miss out on experiencing the rural environment and lifestyle that is far more representative of Paraguay as a whole. This does not mean you have to spend your time in Paraguay using latrines and working in the field though. There are options for every budget and comfort level from hotels in small towns along the main highways to private ranches called “estancias” with many amenities. The former offer a glimpse at life in small-town Paraguay and the later offer a comfortable way to enjoy beautiful landscapes and quiet nights (aside from roosters) of the Paraguayan countryside.

Drink Tereré:
Sitting in the shade of a corredor yeré (wraparound porch) or “mango guy pe” (under a mango tree) drinking tereré is one of the best ways to create a bond of friendship with Paraguayans. Think of it as the non-alcoholic equivalent of chatting over some beers. Tereré is about as Paraguayan as it gets. If someone invites you to drink tereré (this happens even when you are perfect strangers) think twice before passing up the opportunity. If you prefer not to share drinks with others all is not lost. Simply offer to “cebar” or serve the tereré instead and be sure to ask for tips on how to do so. Everyone has their own theory about bombilla placement and water pouring technique and will enjoy explaining it at length.

Hoy es el primer aniversario de Descubriendo Paraguay. ¡Muchas gracias a todos por el apoyo durante este primer año de escribir sobre Paraguay! A manera de investigación para la guía de turismo que estoy escribiendo he pasado el último año explorando los sitios de visitas imprescindibles además de unas cuantas previamente desconocidas. En esta ocasión especial quisiera compartir algunas sugerencias para sacarle el jugo a la diversidad de experiencias que Paraguay le ofrece al viajero.

Se flexible:
Hará que todo sea más fácil. En Paraguay, al igual que en otros paises “subdesarollados,” horarios de partidas y arribos son aproximadas (también se aplica a horarios de oficinas y negocios). En especial es importante confirmar itinerarios de buses y barcos ya que las cosas pueden cambiar (ver sección que sigue sobre el clima). Asegurate de que tus planes de viaje incluyan tiempo extra en caso de un colectivo descompuesto o conexciones perdidas.

Adáptate al clima:
Las rutinas diarias de paraguayos se basan alrededor del clima. Se despiertan temprano para aprovechar las horas frescas de la mañana. Cuando el sol está en su apogeo toman la siesta. Hasta en areas urbanas muchos negocios cierran para el almuerzo/la siesta. Aprende de los lugareños y planea descansar un poco durante las horas más calurosas del día. Toma refugio en un restaurante o cyber con aire, o en una la sombra de una plaza arbolada. Es mejor hacer cualquier trámite en la mañana ya que algunas veces la gente decide no volver después de la siesta. Dependiendo del estado de las rutas la lluvia puede afectar tus planes de viaje. En areas con calles empedradas o asfaltadas una tormenta puede causar que las calles se inunden por unas horas. En areas rurales la lluvia puede convertir los caminos de tierra temporalmente en baches de lodo intransitables.

No seas tímido, habla con la gente:
En Paraguay tendrás más suerte buscando información en persona que en la web. Algunas empresas y hoteles tienen sitios de web pero no siempre estan actualizados. Esto puede ser causa de frustración pero el beneficio es que te estimula a interactuar con lugareños. Al pedir información hay que estar dispuesto a conversar un poco. Por supuesto siempre hay personas que prefieren dar una respuesta inventada a no tener respuesta. Direcciones que terminan en “y puedes preguntar otravez allí” son comunes. También hay que recordad que la mayoría de paraguayos no tienen acceso constante al internet pero casi todos tienen celulares. Si no puedes hacer tu pregunta en persona pero necesitas una respuesta rápida es mejor llamar o mensajear que mandar un email.

Aprende algunas palabras en Guarani:
A muchos les intimidan los idiomas nuevas pero la belleza de la dinámica Guaraní/Castellano es que los dos se entremesclan constantemente. Significa que es completamente acceptable usar las palabras sueltas que sabes donde puedas. Con esto les indicarás a los paraguayos tu interés en su cultura y así ganarás “puntos extras” a tu favor. Decir “ndaipori problema” (“no hay problema”) en el momento oportuno provocará por lo menos una sonrisa. Personalmente he notado una gran diferencia en la forma que soy recibida y la información que logro obtener si empiezo cualquier conversación con “mbaeichapa” (“cómo estás?”) y le meto las otras palabras que sé cuando puedo.

Visita el campo:
En Paraguay, como en el resto del mundo, hay una gran diferencia entre la vida urbana y la vida rural. Especialmente en areas adineradas, Asunción es un mundo aparte del resto del país. Si sólo te quedas en Asunción perderás la oportunidad de ver el ambiente y estilo de vida rural que más representa a la mayoría de Paraguay. No significa que tengas que pasar tu tiempo en Paraguay usando letrinas y trabajando en una chacra para tener la experiencia de campo. Hay opciones para todos los gustos y bolsillos desde hoteles en pueblos pequeños al lado de las rutas principales a estancias privadas con todos las comodidades. El primero ofrece un vistazo de la vida del pueblo y el segundo una opción cómoda para disfrutar los bellos paisajes y las noches tranquilas (con la excepción de los gallos) del campo paraguayo.

Toma Tereré:
Tomar tereré en la sombra de un “corredor yeré” ( corredor que da vuelta la casa) o “mango guy pe” debajo de un árbol de mango es una de las mejores maneras de fomentar la amistad con paraguayos. Es el equivalente no-alcohólico de sentarse a conversar con unas cervezas. Tomar tereré es una costumbre super paraguaya. Asi que si alguien te invita a tomar tereré (esto puede ocurir aunque ní se conoscan) piensa dos veces antes de dejar pasar esa oportunidad para compartir juntos. Si prefieres no compartir bebidas con otros no hay problema – puedes ofrecer cebar el tereré. Asegúrate de pedir consejos sobre como cebar – todos tienen su propia teoría sobre la ubicación de la bombilla y la técnica para verter el agua y disfrutarán de explicartelo con lujo de detalles.

Today, September 29th, is the anniversary of the “Victoria de la Batalla de Boquerón,” celebrating a hard-won Chaco War battle. The Chaco War was waged between Paraguay and Bolivia from 1932 to 1935. The war was fought over an ill-defined border, the prospect of oil deposits, and, for Bolivia, the potential to gain access to the Atlantic Ocean by way of the Río Paraguay. Soldiers were subjected to the harsh conditions of the Chaco Boreal (Norther/Upper Chaco) – savage wilderness, isolation, disease, extreme weather conditions, and lack of drinking water.

Fortín Boquerón ( fortín = small fort or entrenchment) played a key role in the Chaco War more than once. In December of 1928 Fortín Boquerón was overtaken by Bolivians troops; this was in retribution for a suprise attack by Paraguayan forces on Fortín Vanguardia (near Bahia Negra)These incidents almost set off the then practically inevitable war. Both sides reached an agreement mostly because neither was yet prepared for war. Paraguay agreed to rebuild Fortín Vanguardia while Bolivia ceeded control of Fortín Boquerón.

After war was officially declared in 1932 Fortín Boquerón was once again overtaken by Bolivian troops. On September 9th, 1932 Lt. Col. José Félix Estigarribia launched an attack on Fortín Boquerón in an attempt to regain control of the region. An estimated 7,000 Paraguayan troops fought against the 500 Bolivians within the fortín and their 3,500 reinforcements that later came to their aid (these estimates, as well as casualties, vary depending on the source). Fortín Boquerón remained under siege for 20 days after which the Bolivians surrendered unconditionally. The victory at Boquerón was key, allowing for advancement into Bolivian territory.

Fortín Boquerón is located approximately 15 kms from the mennonite colony of Neuland (in turn about 30 kms from Filadelfia). Today it is the site of a large museum dedicated to the Chaco War. The museum is run by Carlos Aguero, a walking Chaco War encyclopedia. The premises also retain many of the original 3,800 meters of trenches. Although they are no longer fortified with barbed wire and snipers, the vegetation surrounding the trenches is enough to make you pity Chaco War soldiers. Almost all bushes and trees are covered in thorns and there are several types of cactuses running along the ground. The walking path follows along the old trenches and leads to two small cementaries for Bolivian and Paraguayan soldiers.

You can also arrange tours from Filadelfia through Gran Chaco Turismo (595 491 432 944 or 595 981 223 974). Unfortunately there is no public transportation to Fortín Boquerón. It is best to call the museum to verify hours at 0981 242420.

Hoy, 29 de septiembre, es el aniversario de la Victoria de la Batalla de Boquerón, celebrando una victoria muy peleada durante la Guerra del Chaco. La Guerra del Chaco se libró entre Paraguay y Bolivia desde 1932 hasta 1935. Los motivos del conflicto incluyeron una frontera mal-definida, la posible existencia de yacimientos petrolíferos, y, para Bolivia, el potencial de conseguir acceso al Océano Altántico por medio del Río Paraguay. Los soldados sufrieron bajo las condiciones severas del Chaco Boreal – naturaleza salvaje, aislamiento, enfermedades, condiciones climáticas extremas, y una escasez de agua potable.

En varias ocasiones Fortín Boquerón jugó un rol esencial durante la Guerra del Chaco. En diciembre de 1928 el fortín fue tomado por las fuerzas bolivianas en retribución por un ataque sorpresivo de las fuerzas paraguayas al Fortín Vanguardia (cerca de Bahía Negra). Dichos incidentes casi iniciaron la ya practicamente inevitable guerra. Ambos lados llegaron a un acuerdo, más que nada debido a que ninguno estaba preparado para la guerra. Paraguay se comprometió a reconstruir Fortín Vanguardia mientras que Bolivia cedió control sobre Fortín Boquerón.

Después de declarase oficialmente la guerra en 1932 Fortín Boquerón una vez más fue tomado por las tropas bolivianas. El 9 de septiembre del 1932 el Lt. Col. José Félix Estigarribia emprendió un ataque al fortín, atentando así retomar control sobre la región. Aproximadamente 7,000 tropas paraguayas combatieron contra los 500 soldados en el fortín y los 3,500 refuerzos que llegaron para socorrerles (estas cifras varían dependiendo de la fuente). Fortín Boquerón permaneció sitiado a lo largo de veinte días antes de que se rindieran incondicionalmente las fuerzas bolivianas. La victoria de Boquerón fue imprescindible ya que permitió gran avanze dentro del territorio boliviano.

Fortín Boquerón se ubica a unos 15 kms de Neuland, colonia menonita (el cual está a 30 kms de Filadelfia). Hoy se encuentra allí un museo grande dedicado a la Guerra del Chaco. El encargado del museo, Carlos Aguero, es un enciclopedia andante de la Guerra del Chaco. El predio también retiene muchos de los 3,800 metros de trincheras originales. Aunque ya no se encuentran fortificados con alambre de púa y francotiradores, la vegetación que los rodea es suficiente para hacer que uno se compadesca de los soldados de la Guerra del Chaco. La mayoría de los árboles y arbustos están cubiertos con espinas y hay muchas variedades de cactus a lo largo del suelo. El camino sigue las trincheras y te lleva hasta dos pequeños cementerio para soldados paraguayos y bolivianos.

The calendar of Semana Santa events starts on page 3. Unfortunately it is only available in Spanish. Another good resource for rural tourism options during Semana Santa is APATUR (Asociación Paraguayo de Turismo Rural) which maintains a network of estancias (ranches) throughout the country. Tañarandy, a small neighborhood in San Ignacio de Missiones about 230 kms from Asunción, is the site of one of the most dynamic celebrations of Holy Friday in Paraguay. At nightfall on Holy Friday the entire town and thousands of visitors from the entire country participate in a candle lit procession visiting the Stations of the Cross. During the procession choirs called “estacioneros” sign hymns as they visit each station (I´ll have more information on the “estaioneros” in the post on Semana Santa religious traditions). After the procession everyone gathers to view “living paintings” in which community members depict life size recreations of famous works of religious art. This mix of religious celebration and art was created by local artist Koki Ruiz. For more info on Tañarandy contact Ruiz´s Fundación La Barraca at 082 232 775.

On the edge of the Tebicuary river, Villa Florida is a charming town about 160 kms from Asunción on Rt. 1. Villa Florida´s white sand beaches and good fishing have made it a Semana Santa hotspot although recently it has developed a reputation for “spring break” type excesses. This year, seeking to return to their family friendly roots, the municipality of Villa Florida has put together a Semana Santa itinerary that includes sports tournaments (canoe races, volleyball, beach football) and religious ceremonies.

While the focus of Semana Santa is on the countryside there are also activities (some religious, some not) taking place in Asunción. Many are listed in the aforementioned Jaha Semana Santa 2009 information packet. Personally I think the Boggie Guaraní parachuting competition looks the most interesting. A bonus to sticking around on Semana Santa: this may be your one chance to stroll along the streets of Asunción without having to inhale fumes from the passing buses.

Tañarandy, una pequeña companía en San Ignacio de Missiones a 230 kms de Asunción, es el sitio de una de las celebraciones de Viernes Santo más dinámicas en el Paraguay. Al anochecer del Viernes Santo el pueblo entero, junto con miles de personas de todo el país, participan en una procesión que visita las Estaciones de la Cruz. Todo el camino está iluminada con velas. Durante la procesión coros llamados “estacioneros” cantan canciones religiosas al visitar cada estación (profundisaré sobre los estacioneros en el artículo sobre tradiciones religiosas de Semana Santa). Después de la procesión todos se reunen para apreciar los “cuadros vivientes” en las cuales miembros de la comunidad participan en recreaciones de cuadros religiosos famosos. Esta mezcla de celebración religiosa y el arte fue creada por el renombrado artista local Koki Ruiz. Situado a las orillas del río Tebicuary, Villa Florida es un pueblo encantador a unos 160 kms de Asunción. Sus playas de arena blanca y buena pesca lo han vuelto un destino popular para la Semana Santa. Últimamente ha adquirido una mala reputación debido al ambiente de farra que predomina. Este año, con el propósito de recobrar el ambiente familiar, la municipalidad ha desarollado un itinerario de Semana Santa que incluye competencias deportivas (canotaje, vóley y fútbol de playa) y ceremonias religiosas.

I have heard through “radio so´o” (the Paraguayan grapevine) that this is a temporary phenomenom. Might as well take advantage while it lasts. Some tips for getting the most out of your dollars in Asunción.

– Change money in the Centro – The exchange rate offered in downtown Asunción (the “centro”) tends to be higher than in Villa Morra and other areas. Most of the “casas de cambio” downtown are located along Calle Palma going 2-3 blocks in either direction from the Panteón de los Heroes
– Financieras usually have better rates then normal banks or exchange houses. There is a Financiera Brios in Shopping Villa Morra and there a couple of financieras along Palma.

– If you are changing a large quantity of money or are a regular ask for a better rate.

– Remember that US $100 bills with serials starting in CB and D are not being accepted.

La taza de cambio para el dólar americano casi ha llegado a los Gs. 5,000 en las últimas semanas. He oido por medio de radio so´o (versión Jopará del famoso “me lo contó un pajarito”)que es un fenómeno temporario. Más vale aprovecharlo mientras dura. Algunos consejos para sacarle el jugo a tus dólares en Asunción:

– Cambia dinero en el Centro – la taza de cambio tiende a ser más alta en el centro de Asunción que en Villa Morra y otras areas. La mayoría de las casas de cambio se ubican en la calle Palma extendiéndose 2 – 3 cuadras en ambas direcciónes desde el Panteón de los Héroes.

– Las financieras normalmente tiene mejores tazas que los bancos o casas de cambio. Hay una Financiera Brios en Shopping Villa Morra y varias financieras a lo largo de Palma.

– Si estás cambiando una suma grande de dinero o sos cliente regular pedí que te den una mejor taza.

– Recuerda que los billetes de US $100 serie CB y D no están siendo aceptadas.

TACA Airlines has announced it will begin service to Asunción starting December 15th! This is great news for two reasons:

1. Anyone trying to get to Asunción knows there are very few carriers that fly here. TACA brings with it more itinerary choices and the added benefit of some much needed competition (TAM just raised prices for all it´s routes leaving Asunción).

2. TACA has one of the most liberal luggage policies around allowing for TWO 22 kilo bags even for flights within Latin America. Now you can haul even more stuff to and from Asunción!

I have flown TACA many times and have never had any problems with them. Flying TACA can be like taking the local train since flights from Asunción will make at least one connection (in Lima or San Salvador) before heading to the US. Last week ABC Color announced a one-day fare sale to Lima for US $200. Hopefully there are more good deals to come! Welcome to Paraguay, TACA!

La linea aérea TACA ha anunciado que empezará a volar a Asunción empezando el 15 de diciembre! Son buenas noticias por dos razones:

1. Si has intentado viajar a Asunción ya sabes que hay muy pocos aerolineas que llegan hasta aquí. TACA trae consigo más opciones de itinerarios y competencia muy necesaria (recientement TAM aumentó las tarifas de todos sus tramos partiendo de Asunción).

2. TACA tiene la política de equipaje más generosa de casi todos los aerolineas ya que te permiten llevar DOS maletas de 22 kilos cada uno hasta en vuelos entre Latinoamérica. Ahora puedes viajar el doble de cargada desde Asunción!

He viajado con TACA muchas veces sin problemas. El único negativo es que un viaje con TACA es cómo tomar el tren lechero. Vuelos de Asunción tendrán por lo menos una conexción (en Lima o San Salvador) antes de dirigirse a los EEUU. La semana pasada en ABC color se anunció una promoción de un día para viajar desde Asunción a Lima por tan sólo US$ 200. Ojalá que ofrescan más promociones pronto! Bienvenidos a Paraguay, TACA!
