As I mentioned in the post on Semana Santa basics, this week is all about the campo (countryside). Senatur has put together a informational packet for Semana Santa tourism called “Jaha Semana Santa 2009″ available for download here (jaha, pronounced “yah ha” means “lets go”):

The calendar of Semana Santa events starts on page 3. Unfortunately it is only available in Spanish. Another good resource for rural tourism options during Semana Santa is APATUR (Asociación Paraguayo de Turismo Rural) which maintains a network of estancias (ranches) throughout the country. Tañarandy, a small neighborhood in San Ignacio de Missiones about 230 kms from Asunción, is the site of one of the most dynamic celebrations of Holy Friday in Paraguay. At nightfall on Holy Friday the entire town and thousands of visitors from the entire country participate in a candle lit procession visiting the Stations of the Cross. During the procession choirs called “estacioneros” sign hymns as they visit each station (I´ll have more information on the “estaioneros” in the post on Semana Santa religious traditions). After the procession everyone gathers to view “living paintings” in which community members depict life size recreations of famous works of religious art. On the edge of the Tebicuary river, Villa Florida is a charming town about 160 kms from Asunción on Rt. 1. Villa Florida´s white sand beaches and good fishing have made it a Semana Santa hotspot although recently it has developed a reputation for “spring break” type excesses. This year, seeking to return to their family friendly roots, the municipality of Villa Florida has put together a Semana Santa itinerary that includes sports tournaments (canoe races, volleyball, beach football) and religious ceremonies.

Activities around Asución:
While the focus of Semana Santa is on the countryside there are also activities (some religious, some not) taking place in Asunción. Many are listed in the aforementioned Jaha Semana Santa 2009 information packet. Personally I think the Boggie Guaraní parachuting competition looks the most interesting. A bonus to sticking around on Semana Santa: this may be your one chance to stroll along the streets of Asunción without having to inhale fumes from the passing buses.

Tañarandy, una pequeña companía en San Ignacio de Missiones a 230 kms de Asunción, es el sitio de una de las celebraciones de Viernes Santo más dinámicas en el Paraguay. Al anochecer del Viernes Santo el pueblo entero, junto con miles de personas de todo el país, participan en una procesión que visita las Estaciones de la Cruz. Todo el camino está iluminada con velas. Durante la procesión coros llamados “estacioneros” cantan canciones religiosas al visitar cada estación (profundisaré sobre los estacioneros en el artículo sobre tradiciones religiosas de Semana Santa). Después de la procesión todos se reunen para apreciar los “cuadros vivientes” en las cuales miembros de la comunidad participan en recreaciones de cuadros religiosos famosos. Esta mezcla de celebración religiosa y el arte fue creada por el renombrado artista local Koki Ruiz. Situado a las orillas del río Tebicuary, Villa Florida es un pueblo encantador a unos 160 kms de Asunción. Sus playas de arena blanca y buena pesca lo han vuelto un destino popular para la Semana Santa. Últimamente ha adquirido una mala reputación debido al ambiente de farra que predomina. Este año, con el propósito de recobrar el ambiente familiar, la municipalidad ha desarollado un itinerario de Semana Santa que incluye competencias deportivas (canotaje, vóley y fútbol de playa) y ceremonias religiosas.

Aunque el campo es el enfoque de Semana Santa también hay actividades llevándose al cabo en Asunción (algunos religiosos, otros no). Muchos son nombrados en el archivo de Jaha Semana Santa 2009. Pilar is in the south, in the department of Ñeembucú. Every year during Semana Santa there’s a big Fishing tournament and tons of visiting family, friends, and tourists.
